Good afternoon gentlemen,

I'm looking at getting a OWB holster for my 686 and am having quite the time trying to find one. Could anyone point me in the right direction please?

Here's an easy starting point.... What's your barrel length and do you prefer plastic or leather?

https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=smith+and+wesson+686+holster&crid=1QALIAJXD96R8&sprefix=Smith+and+Wesson+686%2Caps%2C680&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_20

Simply Rugged make nice leather holsters.

Soley Canadian does nice kydex, not sure if they have an off the shelf OWB for the 686 but they could likely make one for you.

Edit, just looked and Soley does not list a 686 mold on their website... not sure if that is accurate or not might be worth inquiring if your into plastic.

Im open to both materials, but most holsters are listed at 4" instead of 4.25" which is why im leaning towards leather due to the stretch factor.

I have a Ruger GP100 in 4.2"; 4-4.25"; the revolver does not care.

When I got mine, amazon had them for $40.00

I'm also rocking an old 4 inch retention holster. It's bit tight for the retention at the hammer but it works. Its a 4.2 686.

It's not chic nor tactical but I ATC'd my 4" .357 revolver in an Uncle Mike's No.3 holster with the velcro on flap.

It was cheap but serves as a universal holster that protects my handguns well. In addition to the revolver it has ATC'd a 1911 and fits a GLOCK17 and a Tokarev TT33.

It's hard to say if a 4 inch holster will cover the barrel of a 4.25" gun until you try it, most holsters are open ended so worst case it will stick out an 1/8" or so.... looking through the amazon listings I noticed the prices for Azula Gun Holsters were pretty nice, looks like they have been making holsters for 30 years and have a lifetime guarantee.

They list options for L frames with 5" barrels and the prices look reasonable.

Revolver holsters in CANADA are tough to find. Fobus was terrible. Know what you want it to do before you buy. Got lucky and hit a Safarieland out of production at a auction. Getting a cheap uncle Mikes nylon for now till a perfect one come around may be a thought.

There's still the option of finding a Tandy Leather store and spending money (they do online too), they don't need to know what you're making, but some time and assembly skills would be required. At a minimum you learn to really appreciate the skills of those who make good holsters!

El Paso makes nice holsters, another question for the OP to consider is what style of holster, lot's to choose from.

I have heard that some ranges don't allow certain types of holsters but I find the simple practical design of the Tanker style holsters to be attractive.

Not the best for a fast draw completion or cowboy action, but for holding a sidearm safe and secure they work well and can be protected with clothing if the weather is bad on the outdoor range.

I have a Solely Canadian holster that I use with my GP100 (4.2 inch) and my S&W 627 ( 5 inch). The holster is open at the end so can also fit a six inch barrel. It has fit adjustment screws that take only a few seconds to adjust for each revolver.

I'm a bit surprised they don't list any molds for the 686.

Anyone ever order from Galco in the US? Looks like they make nice stuff so I put in an order a while back and they refunded it without explanation. There is no text on the website stating they don't ship to Canada. I am after a OWB leather holster for 1911's that will fit a full size and the commanders.
