I finally got a chance to get ammo and take my Ruger 17 WSM out for gopher shoot. I cannot believe how amazing this round is as wind, distance and anything else seems to not matter. It also leave no survivors which is a bonus. It is worth all the hype it makes shooting gophers a pretty fun day, other than the fact that I am going to run out ammo and never see it again. I am wondering if the blip in getting ammo for this gun is a blip or whether this is a dying round (as sure hope it's not).

Agreed 100% it's a fun little round to blast those critters. Lots of splatters and none going back to the hole.. keep that barrel clean, 17 that fast will fowl up qiuck..
Ammo in a cool place is nice for maintaining accuracy, I keep the bolt open to cool down as much as possible, and not heat the round in the chamber..

Get a 17 hornet or fireball if you reload. A hornet in the gopher patch cannot be beat

I'd love a .221 with Irons and a detachable mag. That seems impossible without a time machine. I wish I had bought a 527 in something suitable for varmints when I had the chance a million different times...

Winchester had come up with the expert chambered in 17wsm at 2024 shot show. They probably gonna produce some ammo too as demand is there and they will not sell much guns if ammo is nat available.

The 17WSM is an impressive cartridge but lacked acceptance by gun and or ammunition manufacturers.
Volquartsen made a nice semiautomatic , that from my experience shoot very well. When they tried to develop a bolt action version in the Summit they encountered issues that they could not resolve to their satisfaction and dropped the cartridge entirely from their product line.

I bought one of those semi auto 17 wsm rifles but couldn't keep it, unfortunately. It just wasnt safe. It misfired and blew out cases so I sent it back and then when they said it was good and sent it back to me, it blew up in my face they next time I took it to the range. They took the rifle back and I got my money back. In my opinion, a simple blowback design with a bottleneck casing is not the best approach, a locking delayed blowback is much safer of a design like what Savage uses in their A17 rifles.

CZ 527 in .22 K-Hornet, shoots a 40 V-Max at 3000+ fps. 550 loads to a pound of powder, virtually no recoil, can see bullet impact at 20x, very minimal muzzle blast, 1/2 MOA accuracy and big enough to not be overly wind sensitive, now that is the ultimate gopher killing machine.

I'm in SSW Ontario and for whatever reason CanTire had a sale on them a while ago. Bought a bunch and so I'm good for ammo.

If anyone desperate for ammo in SSW Ontario, PM me and we can work out a trade for a box.

Considering this is the rimfire forum I'm wondering how many more times the Hornet is going to get talked about to people that clearly aren't interested.
