30-06 is fine, but I prefer belt fed with every third round a tracer encase the moose starts to run away.

I got lest year moose with a 8x57 200gr accubond going 2550fps well placed one shot @100m fix 4x scope, that moose died where he was standing after a he walked in the creek and back….
On the other end, I shot a moose with 30-06 factory ammo 180gr gmx at 180m all well placed bullets(5 of them) and that thing did t want to go down… it had nothing to do with the caliber or the bullet/amo choice(got most of my moose with the combo) but just a tough moose!!

All that to say 30-06 is plenty, decent bullet, at a reasonable distance will do the job 90% of the time, but if you hunt enough you might get one or two that will say fvck that sh1t I will try to absorb as many hit as I can lol!

Reality has a great way of f*#king with theory, many times

Moose aren't hard to take. Hit them in the boiler room, they take a few steps and tip over. Most moose I've taken were inside 80 yards. Wet and swampy areas, or spook them out of bed at 10am.

The reason I use premium ammo, is because I load premium. Increasingly here, everything is limited entry, and $4k in fuel away. Compared to that, loading good ammo is cheap

When I grew up, up north, I ate a lot of moose shot with dirt cheap 308 180gr imperial. Moose hunting was half a tank. You got a moose or brought back a load of firewood. Fur or Fir.

I guess my lack of writing skills clouded my point .
I stacked some more 30-06 from SFRC on sale this weekend and while browsing the choices available someone walked by and asked how I knew which one to buy and if it was good for Moose seeing as most said Deer, Elk,Bear on the box.
They questioned why I just didn't by the $37 ammo and why I opted for the $59 ammo.
Made me really think that actual in school classes to learn about this type if stuff might be a good thing
It should be easier for new hunters to make a choice.

Sorry you lost me at Sfrc. Shopping at liberal traitor companies. More to learn than the picture on the box

I have shot a trainload of moose over the past 65 years. More than half were shot with a 30-06

The first 15 or so were shot with the 180 grain Factory Winchester Silvertip [old style] No moose
ever complained that it was not enough. Personally, I have not found moose particularly hard to
kill. I shot one with my 6mm Remington loaded with the 100 grain Partition. [Not recommending
such a light chambering, but just making a point]

If the package shows an Elk on the cover, then it is certainly OK for moose. Elk are tougher to
drop right where they stand than are moose, in my experience. Dave.

I feel like an average 180-grain soft point at 150 yards would be adequate for an ethical kill on a Moose, provided shot placement is correct.

Why can I not find any 30-06 ammunition packages with a picture of a Moose or the word Moose.

I see plenty with Deer, Elk, Bear...but no Moose.

Is there a reason or that.

Is 30-06 not suggested for Moose any longer ?

Do we need a 300 Win. Mag now after all these years ?

So you pick your ammo you use to hunt with by the pictures on the BOX ? That’s FUNNY . ;) lol RJ

lost count how many the family shot over the years with cup n core 165gr 30-06 sierra gamekings, like many have stated they aint hard to kill and drop fairly quickily most times. cheers

I do not have big experience with mosse hunting but a friend of mine has. He is a guide in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Quite often he has to finish the work when hunters do not do their part. He also hunts in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and BC. So he shoots many moose each year. His rifle is a Brownign x-bolt 30-06 he has been having for 35 years. He only uses 180 grains for all of his hunting, mainly moose and deer. No fancy premium bullets but the CHEAPEST cup and core he can find, of any brand. He only takes braodside shots at less than 300 yards. Wise man for sure.

Funny, first bullet I thought of, 30-40 years ago they used to sell them by the single cartridge where I lived, as many hunters didnt want to spend the big cash for a whole box, 1$ a round at the time, but they were a go to for moose and black bear in the area for alot of folks, including a couple of guides.

Can't beat a partition for moose, John Nosler designed the partition specifically for moose. Federal loads the partition bullets, and of course nosler does as well. 165, and 180 grain bullets, tried and true, designed specifically for moose.
