I have a new (to me) Beretta OU that I got from a CGNer and I want to take care of it. I have some cheap plastic snap caps that are probably completely worn out by now, and I was thinking of getting some better ones for storing/dry firing. I have seen available for sale plastic ones with springs inside as well as shiny chromed and brass ones. I have also seen some that have a "mop" on the end that you are supposed to saturate with oil to protect the chamber. Three questions:
1. Any suggestions as to which kinds/brands are good for letting down the firing pins when storing or dry firing? I want something that won't "wear out" like the plastic ones.
2. Are the ones with the oil-soaked chamber 'mop' worth it?
3. What is a good Canadian source for snap-caps (no-one will ship from the US it seems).
Thanks!

Get a spent hull and pop out the primer. Fill the pocket up with hot glue (everybody should have a hot glue gun!) and cut it flush with a razor blade. Make a dozen while you're at it.

Grouse Man - while it's a good idea and cost efficient, however, I'm afraid that safety aspect may be compromised at the same time.....

I've got the clear pastic ones, if you plan on using them a lot, I don't recommend them. Mine are chewed up pretty bad. They've gone through the gun and onto the floor at least 500 times each though (was a long 3 weeks waiting for range membership). If you use them less than that, should be fine though.

I trim off the crimped section of the empty hull. Remember, it's empty, so it weighs almost nothing. You can't confuse it with a loaded round. And if you're like me, even pulling the trigger on a snap-cap gives me a case of the checkitagains.

or just take any shell you commonlly use weight it now go buy a pack of dummy 209 shotgun primers for use in muzzel loaders and load the shell with cotter balls

i bough a pair of machined brass they don't eject properly

i am onlestly thinking of making up a bunch for doing ipsc drills

this could work as a really mean prank for duck hunting lmao

Good ideas - another CGNer has generously offered to send me a set of brass ones that he has no use for. They should work fine in an OU. Good idea about the chopped down shells and glue-gun though - I never thought of that.

Anyone have any experience/comments on the wool ones shown here? The only place I have to store my firearms can be an area of pretty high humidity, so I'd like to put all the odds in my favour of protecting my nice OU from rust - thought that these might protect the chamber nicely. http://www.choketube.com/accessories.html#d

Empty hulls, de-primmed, trimmed under crimp area, filled with hot glue (primer pocket also filled). Just be careful, the first ones I poured the glue too fast and started melting the plastic.

Don't waste your money on the clear plastic snap caps (the kind with the spring inside), if they have a plastic rim as well. These plastic rims break off and the snap cap is then useless.

I have some solid aluminum ones with plastic "primers", these are quite good and sturdy.
