Hello all,

I would like to shoot long range 400ft+ and none of the ranges near me offer this (Hamilton+GTA). I have heard that we can shoot in Crown land and I was wondering if someone can direct me on how to go about doing that. I would appreciate help on specific places that I can go to and what procedures I need to follow so that I do not get into any trouble. Feel free to PM me if you like or want to join me, I could always use a partner :D

Thanks in advance!

Hey there. You might find a bit of a problem finding crown land down by the GTA. I’m an hour north west of you and it’s really hard to find anything with more then 100 yards.

This is one application to find crown land.
https://www.lioapplications.lrc.gov.on.ca/CLUPA/index.html?viewer=CLUPA.CLUPA&locale=en-CA

You can also look into finding conservation land. But a lot of it won’t allow shooting. If it says hunting is allowed then it’s a better bet.

Also look into local bylaws where you want to shoot to see if there is anything against discharging firearms or noise at certain times. That’s just a matter of finding what region your in and going through their posted bylaws. But generally, I’ve found you need to get north of barrie to find anyplace like this. Or join a club that offers a bigger range.

Have you looked into joining the Ontario Rifle Association? They have access to a 1000 yard range at CFB Borden. This is not a walk-on range, you can only access on booked dates. It also is not a roll-in, roll-out any time of the day that you get there type of event. Practice or match days usually start at 8am and may run until 4pm.

Thanks for the responses. I will look into the crown land application and conservation areas to see what I can find. Ontario Rifle Association sounds like a great option, I haven’t explored this option before.

I live in Alberta and the process for shooting on Crown or Provincial land is pretty simple: drive out far enough that you're away from people or go to one of the designated Outdoor Use Zones. I shoot to 500yds currently, but am having a bit of a harder time finding a safe space that's longer relatively close to home.

Unfortunately, from all the research I've done, you're SOL finding that kind of space in southern Ontario.

Thanks all, I became a member with ORA. Its a 2 hours drive, but oh well :D things we do to shoot

2 hours, pffff. I will already have been on the road for 2 hours before you even leave home. Yup, a little over 4 hours from here to Borden. Sad thing is that I used to have a 1000 yard range 15 minutes from my door. Then the military started to improve the range.

You'll have a great time shooting mid-range distance at Borden. Long Range shooting for the most part is on Wednesdays 4pm - 8pm (1000 yards). I joined as well and shot a 500 yard event but last weekend shot out to 600 meters (656 yards) with my 223 at a Milcun/ORA event and that was a 2hr drive for me. But able to shoot over 100 rounds out to 600 meters and using their Shot Marker electronic hit indicator for $10 was well worth it. AND there is no worries someone will call the Po-Po on you for blasting away in the woods.

Have fun.

Yes, I corrected my post and at the 500 meter range my shots were low and had to go up 2 MOA from my DOPE card.

Later it was mentioned to me the range was in meters so I was good at the 600 meter range once I enter the correct data into the BC calculator.

Great photo!
I was over on the 100m range ROing the Running Boar practice. We now have stages trialed for 5m back to 100m. The moving target system has proved itself to be consistent and dependable. Milcun is an outstanding facility. I believe it is the only privately owned range in ON with a military type gallery range with mounds back to 600m.

I just saw your post and wanted to reach out to you.

I live in Edmonton, and outside of driving 2 hours to the range out in Edson, I'm pretty much limited to the Sherwood Park range, that maxes out at 300 m. I will likely get a membership with the CHAS range in the new year, as they reach out to 800, but until then...

Do you know where one could get a map of where crown land is located? I have a .338 competition rifle and I am really looking to find somewhere to set up a 500 yard march out to get back in the saddle.

Great post op. It’s hard to find crown land to shoot on - I’m currently a member of an indoor range (Burlington) and an outdoor range (Arnstien). The outdoor range is 4 hours away!

If you find any spots hit me up. I’m in the GTA (Brampton).

Couple years ago I was studying how and where to find/go the Crown Land, and ran into some confusions.
If you find and visit a "free" place to sight in your amo and scope for a hunting season that may be OKish, but if the officials recognizes that you started visiting frequently same area that became a no-no. Especially if you shoot with non hunting rifle.
My spots were same 3-4 hrs drive out from my door North East between Muskoka-Algonquin, and when I recalculated all my cost and effort I decided to join SGC 15 Km away where I can drive in less then 15 minutes any time. It was not cheap leasing the share + membership fee, but the Total $ is about there.
Second thought about Borden, hard to catch the time slot for longer range, all registration online until you finish filling up - all booked.
With my f-class 308 it is a waste of amo shooting below 5-600 M I am realizing that. But...I have airguns as well :)
With my FX air rifles training and practising year along that is averaging between 8K to 10K shots easily... ;)
I had people told me "baaah" but no one of them knows that takes some trained skill set hitting X's @ 100 with a pellet, and I am preparing my rig for 200 M rings now.
