.308 or 30-06

haha good thread, been beaten to death 100 times,

my deal, i have a 30-06 but i use Varget and have a 20 inch barrel.... therefore my velocitys are in the 308 league............ i call it a .30-08
i use 47grains of varget which is basically what the 308 uses , lol

:)

i dont think i miss the extra FPS for time being general hunting 250-300 meters.....

im getting my Partner a .308 so we can download it to 30-30 ish velocitys but have the capacity to load it up when she feels fit.

For me, the cost disparity is very compelling, as well as is the application. 30.06 is expensive to target shoot - .308 is not, and you can get a decent variety of 7.62x51 target rounds and surplus, some of which are excellent (ie. Hirtenberger). Recoil aside, there are a plethora of different rounds available for hunting, target shooting (even competitive shooting) and even home defense / self defense .308 rounds (ie. Gold Dot). Plus, if PP can overturn that OIC eventually, I can run my 308 rounds through a semi auto BCL102 again.

I finished reading Nicholas Irving's The Reaper book, and it's interesting - even for him being such an accomplished sniper, his gun of choice was a semi-auto SR25 in .308 - his spotter had a 300 win mag, but he said the .308 round is an all around great round, even for him as a Ranger sniper. There are a ton of different hunting applications with various grains of bullet to use for different sized game. 19 times out of 20, if I were to reach for either my 308 or 30.06, it is always my 308

The correct answer: .308... Norma Magnum :giggle:
I laughed on this one...a buddy from church last year inherited a rifle from his grandfather. He was so excited to get this but realized that it wasn't quite what he thought - he thought it was a 308 Winchester, but turned out was a 308 Norma. Then he and his wife were looking for the ammo for this and struck out everywhere. Yes, we were able to find a couple of places he could get it but at $100 and up for a box of 20, he said forget it. It is now literally a wall hanger.

Lots of hair-splitting between two very similar cartridges here. 308 wins on ammo availability and price, and if you're at all worried about the wee ballistic edge 30-06 gives you it might be time for a rifle the next step up the magnum ladder.

I agree, but then be ready to chasse the none ending delusional quest for “ yes but this one go 100-200fps faster” cause it never really end. 30-06 to 300 win mag to 300rum to 30 nosler(and I don’t know which one is faster) everything in between lol but to each there own, I dont tend to go faster but bigger, 30-06, 8x57, 9.3x62…

Looking for some suggestions to the age old argument... 30-06 or .308.
I've heard from friends that 30-06 is more versatile due to the availability in grain. Which makes it more ideal for what size game you want to hunt.
I also know that I've never heard of a .308 owner who regretted his/her purchase.
I live in a place with lots of deer and the occasional moose, so versatility is definitely important on that front.
I also want to consider things like cost and availability of ammo. Aswell as longevity of suggested brands.
Looking for all the help I can get! I'm a new gun owner on civilian side so I'm looking for as many suggestions as possible

thanks guys
To the OP, there is not much difference between the two cartridges. A 308 rifle may be slightly lighter, I don't buy faster follow up shots with a short action as milliseconds probably don't make a real world difference. The 3006 may be slightly heavier and will facilitate a broader range of bullet selection, I don't buy this as a significant advantage either as all I shoot with my 3006 is 180's anyway.

I would offer for your consideration that the biggest deciding factor is what cartridge the right rifle for you is chambered in. If you want a lever, as another poster mentioned buy a 308. If you want a bolt get either. I would look for a gently used FN Browning, or a Model 70 pre 64, post 64, or New Haven Classic as the discussion on push versus crf is redundant.

Start reloading and make brass from 338 win mag. Cheap and easy, though they end up being tad short in the neck. 308 NM is a great cartridge. - dan

Where are guys getting cheap(ish) surplus 7.62x51 in July 2024?

I'm not seeing the price difference (or selection) between 308 and 30-06 on the local shelves. I will note that the 6.5 Manbun does have cheaper ammo than either on local shelves and that I recently purchased RWS Jagkmatch 6.5x55 for cheaper than I've seen 308 or 30-06 since pre 2019.

I think it was Tenda that had Magtech 7.62x51 for not much more than a buck a round. Lever Arms seems to still have Chinese made steel case for less than a buck a pop. $900 for 1000.

Dunno if 30-06 can be found for like $18 a box anywhere? Cheapest I've bought lately was 150gr FMJ from Prvi at $30

The Chinese copper washed Norinco steel case 7.62x51/.308 is pretty decent. Think they are all newer production (2020) and when bought in the spam case, it is good value. Non corrosive, decent target ammo - ran it through my cheap to not so cheap 308 rifles and performance is decent for what you are getting.
