Scout Scopes, where are they?

I am looking for a Scout Scope but I am noticing that there does not seem to be many options available on the market. The only current decent offerings I can find are:

-Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32mm CF2

-Burris Scout 2.75x20mm

-Burris Scout 2-7x32mm

-Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x28mm (Seems to be out of stock every where, including state side. Discontinued?)

Not a big selection. I understand that there are some handgun scopes out there but I think the eye relief may be too great? Are there any other options on the market that are still available?

I am looking for a decent scope so I am not interested in the amazon/ebay junk. Is a handgun scope a viable option? It will be going on a S&W1854 with an XS extended rail, possibly going on to an 45/70 SBL later on.

Look for shotgun scopes as well, although pay attention to the parallax setting on them. Have one on a .308 but haven’t had any issues shooting out to 200m with a 75m parallax setting on a 2-7 shotgun scope.

Really not a lot of difference between the scout and handgun scopes. Kind of depends on the rifle. If you look at scouts they can sometimes have a pretty short eye relief. A pistol scope will give you a longer eye relief which is needed on some rifles, depending on how far forward your scope is mounted. I’ve used both over the years on scout rifles.

Can’t go wrong with the Leupold or the Burris. Both are great scopes. I’ve been kind of iffy on the Vortex, and I’m a Vortex guy. One of the nicest I’ve used over the years was a Hi-Lux from Wolverine - but I don’t see them listed anymore. If you really want to go gung-ho, I got Clay at Prophet River to order me a 3-12 Burris pistol scope. It’s presently mounted to an Amega Ranges Scout Rail on an old Remington 760 in .308.

I was having trouble finding handgun scopes and decided to try the Vortex scout out. Worked excellent for me on my 357 Rem max contender. I ended up buying two more. One is sitting on a 30-30 pistol with close to 400 rnds fired. I put it on the 30-30 as a punishment test. They are guaranteed so I figured why not. For the price of them they are an excellent scope.

Ive used both VC and BS20mm on a Ruger GS. Both are great.the BS has a shorter distance for eye relief if I'm not mistaken. I'd give a slight edge to Vortex overall for price and what you get. My 2 cents.

This thread reminds me that I have a completely new spare Leupold FX-II Scout 2.5 sitting in the box unused. I had another one used on a couple rifles that always worked well that I never needed to bother with the spare one. Since being discontinued, I kept it around just because but probably should sell it to someone who wants to use it in the field.

In my opinion, the Leupold and Burris FIXED mag options are the ones to get if one really wants a scout-style (IER) scope. The variable versions not only add complication, they are longer, heavier and offer no real magnification advantage. Most will only keep it in 2-3x power and any higher mag is heavily compromised due to the limited field of view based on the design. Scout scopes are no longer en vogue and hence many discontinued, but they do work well in given applications as an alternative to traditional scopes, LPVO or red dot optics.

Try Tyee Marine in Campbell River, lots of Vortex products, and if they haven’t already got it in stock they’ll order it in for you, and they will ship too.

That's what I put on my pre Remlin Marlin 1895GS. It's in low QD rings so I can switch to the ghost ring quickly if needed.

It's a good, fast bright scope and weight wise it is lighter than my variables.

It's a very easy to use setup without complicating things and I had the similar use case for a top-eject Win94, which is essentially scout optic only, hence the FX-II Scout 2.5 + QRW2 rings, which meant I could also easily put the scope on my Marlin as well (JM era but all modernised with all the tacticool bits, rail, etc).

Thanks for all the replies and help. I ended up picking up a Burris 2-7 from a fellow CGN'er and I also managed to scoop a Leupold 1.5-4 from ebay. I threw the burris on my Levtac92 with some Warne qd rings and am quite pleased with it. It's a nice handy truck gun. I am now contemplating picking up a Ruger Scout to throw the Leupold on.

Yep, I always wanted to get a Leupold 2.5x Scout, particularly when you could get them with a German No. 1 reticle. Never bought one and now sadly discontinued 😞. I suppose the only fixed power option now is the Burris.

I've been trying to find the Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x28mm as it is rated the best of the bunch.

Dealers are sold out and don't know if they will receive more from Leupold.

For an idea of eye relief from various scopes given equal length of pull.
