300 win mag - detuned factory rounds ?

Hey crew,
I have a 300 win mag riffle and wondering if there are any factory rounds you know of that have abit less oompff
Love the riffle but the full load is a lot to shoulder and would love to put more rounds through it getting used to it other than the big kick.

Grab a limbsaver shoulder pad. They're about 50$ on amazon and goes over your shoulder. Fits under T shirts, jackets etc. Makes shooting thumpers more enjoyable. Without having to buy a pad for each gun.
 
I agree the ways to reduce felt recoil are pretty set unless you hard mount it. My .338 LM, covers two ways to reduce recoil, weight my Savage 110 BA sits just under 25 lbs. The second is with a muzzle brake, but anyone around me gets annoyed whenever I send a round downrange. I'm just starting to experiment with different bullet weights, I've got both 225 grain and 300 grain to compliment the 250 grain bullet I started with.

My friend has a 300 WM Savage 110 but it's a hunting type, he's running reduced charged 150 grain rounds he's reloaded himself.
 
The thing that seriously helps tame the the perception of recoil is shooting a gun that is much worse, like 458 Lott or similar :)

I might also add( probably not helpfully to OP) a semi-auto action also tames down the recoil significantly. My semi 300wm's recoil is no worse than most of my 30 06 bolts and it doesn't have a brake or fancy stock padding.
 
If you can find trail boss powder it could probably send a 180gr bullet at 1600fps. Unfortunately out of production. And requires reloading.

There are minimum safe powder amounts to. Could likely reduce a .300 win mag to a .30-06 velocities by reloading with regular powder.

Why? Versatility. Why buy a 06 when a 300 can do everything it can do and more.

I have a browning AB3 - I don’t believe it has a threaded barrel - is that generally how they attach?

I did pick up some 150/180/200 gr to test with and did 2 groups of 3 with the 180 so haven’t compared yet.
The velocities and energy from each were similar at around 3300 ft lbs if I recall correctly so they didn’t seem like lighter loads but interested to see if all else equal lower bullet weight gives lower perceived recoil.

Kevin32 hit the “why” bullseye for me - I wanted to buy one hunting riffle that I could take anything with.
Rather have the ability to do a lighter load than not have enough load.
Understanding everything- is always about trade offs and firearms are no exception- so also lie, the suggestion to just buy more 😀

I don't think he'd need to get quite as drastic as trail boss to manage his rifle, the 4064/4895 type powders should bring it down to 30-06 levels (Cast Bullet Handbook for reference). Another way is to use substantially slower than normal burn rate powder, as long as you can keep the pressure high enough for the powder to be happy.
 
I have a 308 Norma magnum which is basically a twin. I have used cast bullets with unique and 2400. Definitely drops the recoil down. Multiple powders are available for use with jacketed bullets and reduced loads. Reloading is the way to go with the magnums even if it’s just to reduce the cost. Once you reload you can go from full power down to 30-30 loads.

Lol, I picked up a .338 Lapua Magnum, 2 complaints. 1 weight nearly 25 lbs, I'm definitely not packing this around in the bush. 2 Just the reloading side of it. I get under 100 rounds out of a lb of powder, and getting the bullet you want. At a min of 225 grain to 300 grain max for now, it throws about 3 1/4 lb of lead in 100 rounds.
The worst part is I like using it. I ordered bras that hit the mail box the evening before the posties went out on strike. So I kept myself busy with a Swedish Mauser, plinking at 500+ meters. But when I shoot the 338 I normally stop at about 30 rounds.

if possible get a good stock,ie boyds prairie hunter. the monte carlo stock makes the rifle butt sit in your shoulder pocket and it is heavier than a synthetic stock to soak up recoil

And what can't an 06 or a 308 do that the average shooter could reasonably expect to accomplish with a 300 WM?

There is NOTHING that roams N America that a 308 can't kill. NOTHING. The statement about "not having enough load" is a dead giveaway to someone with little experience. It's the same BS that newbie motorcycle riders use to justify buying WAY too much bike.

The one thing I can tell you with absolute certainty is that a big stupid magnum will inhibit your development as a shooter and will make learning and developing marksmanship skills WAY harder and WAY slower. But hey, you do you. :rolleyes:

I have access to a 338 LM and a 300 NM. They are both friggen cannons. And it never once occurred to me to try to download them to sling expensive high BC match grade bullets downrange at lower velocity. The entire point of a large magnum caliber is to deliver a heavy, high BC projectile at high velocity. 🤷‍♂️

Much like large cc sport bikes, magnum rifle calibers are really best left for shooters with the skills and experience to make use of them. But boys are stupid and tend to think with their balls rather than their brains ... so we get newbies asking how to download the stupid magnum because it hurts them. :rolleyes:
