Hunter and his dog missing in Northern BC ----> UPDATE: Dog Proved Not to be Murphy!

The stats are the stats. They are facts. Not sure what the rural vs city thing has to do with it? Were we not talking about attacks and deaths? Not some Jed Clampet shooting a bear from under the old apple tree?
You don't need to prove it, as of course its an accurate statement. Off topic, but accurate.

I said that the meaning or relevance of the stats vary with respect to people, their locations with respect to the animals in question and the amount of time and activities that they spend in the habitat that the animals live in.

I thought that I had made it simple to understand.

Must have had something to do with the dog . That he left the scene and split fast and far tells of a big happening either near the truck or further along. Scratching on trees with grizzly nearby isn't a good idea either. They need hibernation food.
Completely disappearing may not be all that uncommon in the bush ,one way or another. The girlfriend should take some time off work ,put a group together and keep looking. Something will turn up.

Enough to know that while it sounds really good, it would be a far less likely scenario than most people think. Slips, falls, and getting lost are all statistically more plausible than a bear attack. Particularly that late in the season, and if the fella was foraging for something.
It certainly isn't impossible,,, just far less possible than the usual causes.

Do you know what an old boar smells like from say 15-30 ft.

Yup, pretty tough to get attacked by a wild animal if you're on the chesterfield watching TV in the 'burbs!

Stats are of limited value, when a lot of interactions aren't recorded. I had to dispatch a problem bear that totally lost its fear of people. Had a mama griz pop her teeth at me in the bush. Had a small bear approach and watch from behind a tree, when I managed to get stuck in the bush. Had a couple coyotes stalk my dog and I another time. Well maybe a couple times if I count a "luring" incident, but this time they end up getting 9 or 10 yards from us. Followed by a lynx. Had a skunk run up to me; another time a badger. Come face to face with a fox, rode up to a bear cub when I was a kid, another time. These all seem like relatively rare occurrences if you talk to city dwellers, but probably not so much, if you spend a lot of time in the woods.

A dog can get a guy in trouble too, as a couple of our dogs treed a bear on me once, and another time, one of mine chased a fair sized one away from a berry patch. Was fortunate for all involved that the bear decided to keep running.

Knew a guy that had 5 (IIRC) bear attacks under his belt, another guy that had to shoot a griz in his ginch, and talked to the fella that got scuffed up by a mama griz by Swan Hills.

But you talk to some folks and that just doesn't happen! Well, guess it doesn't in their world....

Probably best for you to stay inside then? It appears that in your world if you go outside at all, you'll be attacked.
Also appears that reading and comprehension also isn't your thing. That's ok as well.
You fellers carry on....
Stay safe out there!

I and the other fella you are referring to read and understood just fine. To paraphrase, it was something like: "blather blah-blah, muh stats, no one's ever attacked in GTA, blippety blah!" Pretty accurate? Yeah, about sums it up.

Everyone here understands what stats mean. Stats show the average Canadian has a very low chance of injury from ice climbing, or F1 racing too. However the chance climbs a little bit for the person actually participating. Does that make it easier to understand now?

Kinda weird that something is allegedly so rare, but they'll issue a warning about it.

I don't think anyone in this thread said attacks happen every day but they are common enough that anyone using the back country , or living on the boundaries where urban sprawl is encroaching on wilderness habitat, folks should take the necessary precautions. Be it a firearm or bearspray.
Animal encounters remain very real possibilities in "many" missing persons cases in BC and that's hard to argue.

Exactly. I used to hardly give a second thought to wildlife attacks. Have stalked a little bear to 8 yards before I let him know I was there, and scared a bear off the trail to get back to town, when I had no gun on me. Enjoyed watching some grizzly, without fear of death, but there is always the possibility that I have to deal with an aggressive animal.

I also know there are quite a few interactions not reported. Including the people never found.

I know the second article linked very well. Gentleman is a friend of mine and that article doesn't tell half of the story.

I don't believe the dog (18 months old ) swam the peace river. The nature of A dog that age just wants to have fun and run away into some new undiscovered adventure. You must be careful they don't get out of your sight or they will get lost. After they get lost they travel ,trot ; you've seen them. I'd like to know where he was found and under what conditions; scared, 100k. from⁹ truck ; punctured ?? ; fighting ?? or thorns ?? ; or spent shotgun pellets?? ; emaciated ,but he must have had some food . He must have been transported 100k away but abused and escaped .Or he was transported to the other side of the river ,thrown , on that side of the river ,near the bridge ,with the missing person, swam ashore and travelled to where he was found. The searchers could look in the river ,near the bridge on that side.

Has it been confirmed that it is the right dog? I assume they'd have to do DNA testing since no collar or chip.
