Hi folks, my current scope on my 10/22, lets just say... leaves a lot to be desired. It's just about the opposite of quality so I'd like to upgrade it. Any suggestions for a scope? (ideally that won't break the bank)

Thanks!

We really need a budget before we can suggest anything. I have a $10 scope on one 22lr and a $400 scope on another... For some, $1000 doesn't break the bank, for others $200 is too much to spend on a scope for a rimfire...

Your intended use for the gun would be good information too. Just punching paper? Small game hunting? Rimfire PRS? What sort of ranges do you shoot?

Primarily 50yrd range for plinking. If possible around $100-$200
Unfortunately you won't get much quality for your $100.00-$200.00 price range.

In saying this, check out the EE here on Gunnutz and the optics section on Gun-Post. For about $250.00 you should be able to pick up a pre-owned Nikon, Weaver, Leupold, Bushnell, Burris and other scopes. I'm not a Vortex fan, but make your own decision through research on the internet. I investigate products to the enth degree before laying down my money.

Good luck!......:)

For a .22 I don't think you'd go wrong with a $50-$60 Tasco or Simmons. It is just a .22 after all, you're not going to be competing in the Olympics I assume.. I think the idea of dropping a hun or 2 on a .22 scope is unrealistic

Most people would say that

I was going to type basically the same thing.

If that's the distance you're shooting, it's a rimfire scope you want. Most scopes have a parallax setting of 100 yards plus, "rimfire" models are usually set @ 50-60 yards. Adjustable objective scopes are my top pick for 22s, you can dial those in real close. Airgun scopes will work too, you could consider a budget brand like HAWKE, there are dealers in Canada. One in BC comes to mind. (D&L)

It's easy to looks at scopes without looking at the application/distance. Scopes can be very application-specific or at least, distance-specific if you want everything to work the way it should.

If I was scoping a 10/22 on a budget, I might consider an older Bushnell Banner AO, newer Sightron S1 4-12 AO. I've had several Banners and still have a Sightron S1. Lots of interesting AO/used options. In fact, about every week or two I just plug in "AO" to the search bar in the optics EE as there are always a couple I'm after.

Glass clarity and resolution, parallax that works, turrets that track and not move under useage... to me, that is what a good scope has to do.

I got an Athlon Talos fixed 10X and blown away by how good it works. not sure what they will cost in 2025 but they were not expensive in 24. This was a new scope in 2024 with all the upgrades going through the Athlon line up without the price.

The Talos is typically an entry point scope but this one is built using similar internals to their more expensive lineups

I would strongly suggest NOT to get a high mag optic at low pricing.

YMMV

My go too for cheap plinker rimfire scopes is the Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32. They retail around the $200 mark. Glass is decent scopes light and small.

I have 2 of them. one rimfire model on my CZ457 and one standard on my 30-06 Savage Axis. Both have been flawless and reliable. The only complaint is the turrets are a bit mushy compared to my higher end scopes and even the cheaper Bushnell stuff.

Have had a few of the bushnell Banner 2 scopes and they punch way above there price point. But if there is an issue (one of mine failed first outing ) it is a bear to get warranty coverage It seams.

Purchase a good quality rimfire scope with the correct parallax adjustment. I run a leupold 4x rimfire scope on one unit and a vx freedom rimfire 2-7x32, moa rimfire reticle on a different rig. My rimfires are for grouse/ hares/ bullseyes, and deserve good optics for proper placement.

Vortex crossfire 2-7 rimfire
OR
Bushnell R3 rimfire 3-9x40

Both no brainer. Inexpensive with awesome warranty and will increase your fun.

Yes I own both

Vortex is Chinese garbage, do not buy a Vortex!......:(

I've run an Athlon Neos, their lowest-end model, on a 22 under undemanding conditions and it acted just like a real scope. No complaints!
