If you are in the small group of exempt people and can legally have a handgun transferred to you then anyone can sell to you.

Put up a "Wanted to Buy" ad.

Is the authorization to use a handgun on a trap line enough to buy them?

Handguns

4.1 The chief firearms officer may authorize the transfer of a handgun to an individual only if the individual needs the handgun

  • (a) to protect the life of that individual or of other individuals;
  • (b) for use in connection with his or her lawful profession or occupation; or
  • (c) to train, compete or coach in a handgun shooting discipline that is on the programme of the International Olympic Committee or the International Paralympic Committee, and the individual provides a letter to a chief firearms officer from a provincial or national sport shooting governing body indicating
    • (i) that the individual trains, competes or coaches in such a discipline,
    • (ii) the specific discipline in which the individual trains, competes or coaches, and
    • (iii) that the handgun that the individual seeks to acquire is necessary for training, competing or coaching in that specific discipline.

Is running a trapline considered your profession or occupation, or is it a secondary income source? I knew a guy who owned a big chunk of land where he spent a few weeks a year goldpanning, he was told he couldn't get an ATC because it wasn't his primary income source.

It falls under remote wilderness worker; it is considered an occupation if you look at most sites including EPPS they mention only transferring to trappers/Olympic shooters as for it prospectors will only apply if you are hired as a prospector by a legitimate company not as a hobby/private land not designated as mining claim

just received an email fromthe ontario CFO, so I can definitely confirm the above as true

If you have a trap line you still must pass the test for trappers to be able to carry and purchase a handgun
Post a wanted add after you have rece Bed your trappers license
I have a1911 45 acp and a new 44 Ruger revolver I could sell to you

In that case I'd just start calling the closest gun stores and ask if they still have any handguns they can sell to exempt individuals.

As others have said you can buy from anyone, private seller or business if you are exempt - it will be your cfo approving the transfer and if you are indeed approved it's pretty simple.

A restricted handgun cannot be imported for you so you are limited to what is in the country already... Unless you can convince a film production licensed company to get something and then sell it to you when they are done with it.

Are you approved for a handgun for dispatch? I expect you are limited to 22 caliber then. Restricted only or prohibited too? Is there something specific you were looking for? We have some Ruger Wranglers (lol, I know, not the nicest) so when you have confirmed your paperwork, post a WTB and I'm sure you'll get offers :)

I ask about prohibited because they are not limited to only being imported for film/agency use. I expect you'd have to incorporate like the security companies do, but it may be an interesting avenue to explore...
