Hey folks. Got a henry 357 mag to be a close range brush gun this year. My friend is getting me into reloading but I can only find lighter hollow point rounds at x reload under their hunting rounds but I wouldn't trust that to take out a white tail. I know shot placement is king and 50 yard would likely be the max distance I am shooting but is there a lead or other kind of 158 grain or heaver bullet I can reload with that you folks know of? I have H110 hodgdon powder and large pistol magnum primers I am using.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the fast replies guys. New to CGN looks like a good place.

the 140 grain polymer tip looks pretty neat. I've only ever trusted lead, probably just a mental thing. feels like I'm launching a brick. if Hornady makes it, I'll definitely give it some trust though.

Is the XTP a hollow point bunny? Have you ever hunting whitetail and similar with it? I still hunt 90% of the time so if I do find something I wouldn't want to risk it. I know around here if I'm stand hunting i'll always get a second chance, but if you drop stuff with a hollow point round I'll trust your experience. does HP leave much of a blood trail?

Please make sure you read the Henry manual in regard to reloading for the rifle. There is clear information in the manual as to what works and what doesn't.

I share your wariness about hollow points in a 357 for deer. I like an exit wound because two blood trails are always better than one. I shoot a Brazilian M92 copy in 357 and like 158 grain lead jacketed bullets, but you also couldn’t go wrong with a hard cast Keith style bullet. Heavy is always good in bullets as they penetrate better, and the Keith style is designed for cutting a clean entrance hole and a flat nose to impart shock.

A buddy of mine was shooting ae 158gr jacketed hp and blowing thru 6 gallon water jugs lined up. He was getting more penetration in water jugs than my 44mag with 240gr xtps
We didn't find his bullets but the last exit hole showed good expansion
That would be fine for whitetail in archery type ranges

The 158 gr XTP with a healthy dose of H110 pushing them out of my 77/357 has taken a 1600lb beef at 100 yards (between the eyes), dispatched many domestic pigs including an 1150lb monster and a couple of sick horses for a neighbor. All head shots (many at zero range), but a completely trustworthy projectile. The Ruger is deadly with jacketed bullets, sprays cast lead in something not even resembling a pattern.

I rarely read the manuals but always keep them for just incase things like this, thanks cosmos!

Thanks for all the replies folks. I'll look around for the 158 gr XTP bullets to reload with after checking my henry manual. Thanks guys!

Last question is where do you guys buy your reloading bullets/supplies?

I found Xreload and my buddy is on his way back from ottawa going to be grabbing us some supplies there. Is there anywhere else we can get supplies? I live in Nova scotia, he lives near the gun dealer in macadam so he has a good bit of selection. I think I myself am mostly limited to online.

You should re-read your manuals and let the info soak in...you will discover your "large pistol magnum" primers are the wrong ones for .357
I will for sure. I haven't reloaded the 357 yet and would certainly double check everything before I did. I just said that one as I assumed that would be it, but thanks.

My usual places are Cabelas in Dartmouth. Flint and Steel in Debert. Kelvins in Chester Basin.

Check out Budget Shoot Supply in BC, they’re awesome to deal with.
