Well....I went through the lengthy paperwork process (with the help of the questar folks....what a great group!) and managed to feed the M14 addiction a dose of LRB Arms. The folks at LRB were great with respect to the whole "waiting for permits" game and when everything wound up approved they threw my build together in only a couple of weeks. 5 or six weeks after that for importation/registration and the box showed up at the post office...man was I excited!

I ordered the gun with an 18.5 inch medium weight barrel, but changed my mind after placing the order and figured a standard profile would be better. The change of heart was made quite late in the process, so rather than disrupt the built process I decided to change it out once the gun arrived. The reason I wanted the changeout was so I could scout-mount an aimpoint and then do a range-review comparing a USGI part scout build on a norinco receiver, a scout build on a springfield receiver, and the LRB all in the same configuration.

So when she arrived I swapped out the stock with a birch stock purchased off another CGNer (nothing wrong with the walnut stock they shipped it with, however the birch one sure is pretty), replaced the barrel with a factory criterion 18.5 incher that I imported earlier in the year, and mounted an Aimpoint M3 2 MOA on a Rooster33 scout mount. I was initially going to use the new marstar scout mount and ordered one for the project, however I was shocked to discover that the hole is too large to properly clamp on a USGI profiled standard barrel! I miked 10 other barrels I had laying around just to make sure it was not the barrel...they all measured 0.700 +or- 2 thou. so it is definately the mount that is screwed up. I was too lazy to go out to the garage to find a chinese barrel in my scrap pile for measuring, regardless the Marstar mount I bought does not work with an American made barrel. Crappy. Well...the hunt was on for a Rooster33 scout mount (they used to be available from Brownells...but no longer!) and I managed to find another CGNer who was willing to part with a couple.

Notes on the barrel change: the medium weight barrel I pulled off had obvious signs of having her shoulder turned down. The reason for this became obvious when I went to hand tighten on the replacement barrel. It came tight at the 9:00 position...a full 90 degrees from where she would need to draw to for proper indexing! A quick shave on the lathe solved this problem and she was quickly torqued into place on the receiver. While this had me grumbling a bit as it precludes just spinning on a replacement barrel without some lathe work, I figure it is better than the other way around where there is not enough draw and a guy has to roll the shoulder back.

Headspace wound up being about 1.632. Not as tight as my TRW bolted norinco (smoking tight at 1.630...amlost uncomfortably tight!) and about 0.001 shorter than my springfield.

Anyway....the rest of the rifle is a mixture of H&R and Winchester USGI parts.

The finish on the rifle is unbelievably nice. No comparison to the chinese gun and about par with the springfield. Fit is tight tight tight....no comparison to a springfield and IMHO better than a chinese gun with either factory or USGI parts.

Comparative range report to follow.....:) Thus far though I am tickled pink and would shell out the same coin in a second to have at least one good looking girl in the collection!

Well bloody hell, now I just want to shoot mine(norc that is), but with exams coming up, bloody papers to write and going to the states this summer....oh well, september it is. Beautiful rifle by the way!!!

Brobee, how did you get an export permit approved by the U.S. State Department? I thought all M-14 parts were restricted. I.e. The U.S. won't allow them to be exported to Canadian civilians.

That's a sweet gun by the way. I became interested in M-14's after I read the review of the Troy Industries MCS stock in the Jan/Feb issue of Special Weapons for Military and Police. The article involved an M-14 receiver made by Fulton Armory but some research on the web convinced me that LRB Arms is the Cadillac of M-14's.

Here's a link to the MCS stock for those that are interested.

Thats a truly beautiful rifle !

Mind if I ask how much it costed you to bring it up here ?? Thats an exotic piece after all.

I was told up front by the questar guys that there was no guarantees with respect to the state department approving the export permit; in fact that there was real risk that it could be denied and they suggested that while this had happened to them in the past they had also had some approved. It's a little unsettling when opening up the wallet to think that the outcome of the endeavour is subject to a large degree of qualitative judgement (or perhaps just plain mood?!?!) of a foreign government official, however if you don't apply you don't give them the opportunity to say yes. I'm not sure how exactly they worded the paperwork, but the sun must have been shining over the state department office that day 'cause it came back approved! I was pretty excited....:)

With respect to the USGI parts used in the build, I was somewhat pleasently surprised however one of my two springfields (imported via different importers) showed up with a large number of USGI parts in it also. How does the reasoning go behind the state department allowing this? I don't know but I'm not going to complain.

Build Details:

  • LRB M14SA receiver with mixmaster Winchester & H&R parts
  • 18.5 inch medium weight non-chrome lined barrel
  • Sadlak op rod spring guide
  • Sadlak Ti Gas Piston
  • Smith Enterprise Direct Connect Vortex
  • Smith Enterprise Dovetail Gas Lock Front Sight
  • Walnut Stock
  • 5 round magazine
  • leather sling
  • fabric carrying case
  • cleaning kit

Costs:

$2233.00 = $2300US @ 1.03US/Can
$225.00 - Import/Export Paperwork
$223.92 - GST and shipping from Questar's Canadian Office
-------------
$2681.92 All-In

Pretty pricey but have a gander at a USGI Norinco Build:

$400 - Norinco Receiver
$350 - New USGI Bolt with all guts
$300 - USGI Operating Rod
$300 - USGI Gas assembly
$250 - USGI Barrel
$100 - SE Vortex
$100 - SE Dovetail Gas Lock Front Sight
$250 - USGI Stock complete with all hardware
$75 - Sadlak Op Rod Guide
$25 - USGI Op Rod Spring
$300 - USGI Trigger Group
$100 - USGI Rear Sight Assembly
---------
$2550

And it does not include things like the tools you need to check headspace, barrel vice/action wrench or any of the hourly work required to part/thread barrels etc etc etc. Now about here is where Hungry will chime in and tell you that your #### won't actually fall off if you shoot your Norinco without all these USGI parts and you know what...

HE'S RIGHT!

There is not alot wrong with the chinese guns other than their stocks and rear sight assemblies; a couple hundred bucks will fix that up for a fraction of the cost of an LRB.

I have many chinese M14s with varying degrees of USGI upgrades (some are almost bare bones chinese! GASP!) and I enjoy shooting the crap out of them. But I love this type of rifle and there is something special about one that has a bit more soul (and good looks to boot!)...something I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford. At least that's what I keep telling myself....:)

I can't see you would not be able to import just the receiver. And not only do they sell just the receiver, but you could also get a barreled receiver or a barreled receiver with a headspaced bolt.

ahhh.... barrelled receiver with a headspaced bolt..... :dancingbanana: now we are talkin

I'm glad I'm not the only guy around here with this m14 lunacy hehehehe
thanx for the tips brobee, I'll head to the LRB website ;)

The LRB Reciever is NOT a USGI M14 reciever/part..............only True M14 USGI parts are restricted for export..................The LRB is no different then the Springfield M1A.....................

Jason, that is a sweet looking rifle :D...........I have admired then LRBs for quite some time.IMHO, the LRB is the ONLY M14 Type reciever to buy if you want to do a serious build.............and also the only forged M14 ype reciever on the market..............
