Yeah, no schit... I've done it.

But It has me thinking about these Model Sevens an their pencil dck barrels!!

I've settled a 35 Whelen down to shoot acceptable groups by what I can only recall as wrapping Duct tape around the barrel end a few times... This, playing with the Harmonics of said barrel.... No other explination.

I did it to the Kimber too I rekon, iirc. It has a few wraps of Elec tape on the muzzle end, 1 inch back.

So I wrapped some on the Model Seven, just after the forend and at the muzzle, I plan on testing this theory with some 180gr corelokt factories on which it didn't really seem to love....
But
I will also be reloading the 165gr Hot cors in due time an plan on developing a load with it on initially aswell...

The Idea will be to perhaps 'stoffen' or alter the Harmonics of the barrel an see if it helps.

I realise I proberly should and May darn well develop with NO tape at first, so that could change ..

Anyone else ever used Tape to tune a barrel?? 😎😎

Considering how electrical tape turns nasty as it ages, or is heated, using it seems like a short term solution. A little more information as to how results were measured would be helpful though.

they sell a rubber thing that slides on a barrel to moderate the harmonics. About an inch wide, looks a number of washers with spacers. Usually find in the rimfire sections

The good stuff lasts a good while, the Kimber's had been on there for oh, a good while now.

But yeah it can go tacky an ####ty.
Having an idea of how many wraps could help?

I'll note the Model sevens reactions.

-- yeah the rubber rings were what have me the idea 😆😂

Cheers

The only way I've been able to stabilize Mod7, pencil barrels is to install two 5mm set screws at the tips of the checkering on the fore stock.

Just on the edge of the panels, so you can adjust the pressure of the stock against the undersides of the barrel.

This works very similarly to the way most off the shelf rifles used to be bedded 40 years ago, before free floating everything became the rage.

I don't know how well this fix will work with an injection molded stock, such as you have but it worked great on the MacMillan composites I had on my rifles. The best fix, was a heavier barrel.

What the OP describes is very similar to the once popular Red Green Tuner. While the effectiveness was questionable, the economy was not. In addition, the appeal to the DIY crowd was significant. Bill

here you go, 45cat - https://www.amazon.ca/LimbSaver-Target-Stabilizer-Dampener-Standard/dp/B00TP8G4DK/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1 $16-17 . these can help if you fiddle with positioning; come in 2 sizes. the rubber is supposed to dampen the vibes and reduce them.

I bought one of Limbsaver/tuner things at Cabelas. Thought for $20 it’s worth a try. Tried it on my .22 magnum. Well what a bear to put this thing on the barrel, just bought the regular model, my gun is not a heavy barrel. I greased it and the barrel and it was all I could muster to get this thing on the barrel and to remove it, almost had to cut it off, never again. After fighting with this gizmo it made absolutely no difference in accuracy on my rifle, nada. The money would have been better spent on ammo.

I haven't 'tested' one yet, but there are many good reviews on amazon and RFC, and other sites. It has to be 'moved' to work like a tuner. And there are 2-sizes for a reason . . . I wouldn't try to put a standard one on my VMTR with a 1.1+ " barrel.

I considered one and due to the size. I decided to go with a metal shaft collar.
