240 Wby Barrel life

So I’ve been using weatherby mags for a few years and absolutely love the 240 especially. I’m worried I’m enjoying mine too much as I have about 200 down the pipe and guys have told me it’s a 1000 round gun. Mines a mark V deluxe and it’s a dream to shoot. What’s your guys take on 240 barrel life? I don’t shoot long strings and usually only about 4 to 5 in a string and never rapid fire with short breaks (maybe 30 sec to a min between shots). Never had it super hot. Feel free to mention your favourite WBY cal as well

Your doing the right thing by not heating the barrel too much but there's no getting around the fact that it's a tough caliber on barrels.

I have a 240 with a Douglas Supreme barrel but not many rounds through it at this point. I figure if I burn this one out I'll just have it bored to 257 or 270 wby and keep shooting.

Wrong bolt face the 240 WBee is a std bolt face size 😊while the 257 and up are Magnum faces 😁

Anyhow I shoot a MK 5 ultralight 240 and it’s a Hummer ! Loves the Nosler 95 gr B Tips at plus 3650 fps 😋
Barrel life will be short but I don’t shoot it much so it will out last me 🤷🏼‍♂️

Get a borescope and check the throat erosion.

All your pondering will be no more.

Teslong makes a very affordable borescope, most times available through Amazon…….

Thank you sir. I definitely will pick one of those up. It’s probably something I should’ve had in my tool kit years ago, but it’s only now that I’m actually able to shoot enough to even potentially shoot anything out ha ha

I’ve been running Barnes TTSX 80 grains and mine definitely cloverleafs. I have some hundred grain Nosler partitions I’d like to load up and try. Because I’m poor I saved all my spent brass religiously because even brass for a 240 is insanely expensive. I’ve come to find.

Have you shot any game with that load? Sounds awfully fast for a cup and core bullet, but I know BTs tend to have pretty thick jackets?

OP one of the things about barrel life is there is a wide range of what could be considered a shot out barrel - A guy who shoots f-class competitions is going to consider a barrel done long before Joe Hunter for example.

I parted with my 257 unfortunately but I am on the waiting list for the vamintmaster 224 when prophet river gets them but I have been eyeing a 270 Weatherby lately

No, don't. A borescope will not tell you anything worthwhile. The only important thing is how the barrel shoots. The condition of a barrel is totally irrelevant as long as it shoots well.

Uhhhhh ....... do you understand how a barrel is made? One does not bore out an existing barrel and change the caliber.

I used to shoot gophers with a 70gr Ballistic Tip at ca. 3600 fps out of my 243. That combination absolutely vapourized gophers.

I have a Custom 240 Weatherby on a Winchester Mdel 70 action. I as well, have only about 200 rounds shot out out it. Velocities in which the gun accepts is, 3,684 average with, 90 grain Accubonds. The accuracy has not dropped-off, case-in-point, I have better accuracy, than at the begining. Barrel is a custom 27" stainless steel, made by Bob Jury from Red Deer.

You have many life-years remaining on you're barrel. The antelope in my avatar was killed with that 240. DRT!

I don't shoot a 240 Wby anymore, but still use a 240 Gibbs once in a while, they're pretty much ballistic twins. Shoot slow, it's not a cartridge that you want to be engaging in high volume shooting. Even if it is only 1000 rounds until the barrel is gone, how many years of hunting is that? A lot. - dan

Ron Smith (or his son who is doing most of the work now I hear) does, if there's enough meat in the barrel. - dan
Yeah that's the one i was told about, thanks for bringing up the name I couldn't remember.

I shoot LH and its hard to find anything bigger than 7 rem mag and 30-06, so I'm hoping to get one of those bored out to a 35cal in the future. Braces are bloody expensive and two of my kids are currently sporting them though so my fun money is pretty scant this year.

Went through that when my kids were small. Seriously cuts into your gun money. Good luck. - dan

Shot a couple of Yotes ! And Targets ! If I decide to hunt deer with it I will use ACCUBOND 90 gr-ers or 80 - 85 Barnes TTSX-TSX bullets 👍

I tried some Barnes 95 LRX bullets and they tumbled at 100 yards 😭 10 twist will not stabilize them even shooting them FAST !

I’ve replaced the B&C stock with a PEAK 44 CF stock and installed a trigger tech trigger too . Total weight with scope is 104 oz 😊

I kind of agree on the bore scope being useless unless you really know what to look for! Also if you are a hunter and your rifle is a hunting rifle(that it is) it doesn’t matter if the throat is eroded or not, if the barrel is dark or not as long as the rifle shoots where you want and the barrel still is consistent and gives you what you want for groups then just keep shooting! Plus when the accuracy drops you can get a new barrel spun on and start again!!

Bolt faces on a Mauser can be opened up Jim.
