Elk Hunt

Well, I spent 4 days in the farm country, and the elk are all somewhere else at this time. Did not hear any bugling, either.
So, I decided to take a break, and return later, after the rut has ended. Full moon and warm weather conspire against
one as well. Hopefully, there will be a better chance later. Truly enjoyed my solitary time, though. :) Dave.

Happening but quiet and slow, was warned off of our trip to Groundbich last week, hoping it is better later this week.
Guys absolutely everywhere. Who would of thought with the ridiculous price of fuel that every guy and his dog would be out hunting.

.......

Good luck everyone on your hunt!.....:)
ripple effect of the northern moose closures mayb?

Chased a bull up, down, round n' round but couldn't get him in sight. They sure do like to hang out in some nasty thickets.

I don't think he was fond of my bugling either. Perhaps more practice is needed.

I have a an special antlerless elk license. Hoping to go out next weekend. Definitely a freezer-filler, if I come across one. It'll be great to get out there.

I just got back from my third elk hunt. One thing that I've had to get used to is that elk won't come out into the open if there's any wind. The first four days were windy. Sometimes with rain added in. I saw great elk sign but no elk in the daylight. Day five I had three cows about 50 yards in front of me in the morning. In the evening 20 elk came out of the woods at 550 yards, 10 minutes before sunset. One bull in the group. Called him in to 140 yards and dropped him.

I'm not sure there's anything quite as sweet in hunting as busting your butt for days with nothing to show, then hearing a bull elk bugle, and then have them come out and come straight at you.

Well, no Elk for me this season. However, I headed up into Peace Country to hunt deer on Nov 15.
Shot a 4x3 muley on the first day ☺️ Then added a 3 point whitetail on Saturday.:D Both were in
excellent shape with plenty of internal and external fat....no stink yet, so looking forward to some
excellent steaks/chops/roasts, plus sausage and pepperonies. For those who are curious, they both fell
to my M700 CDL in 270 Winchester, using a 140 Accubond chased by 55 grains of Reloder 17. Shots
were 350 yards and 220 yards. No pics yet, but will add later. Dave.

You got any pics yet Dave. You know I love seeing the hunting pictures.

I have never hunted elk but I may try this year . No LEH so would have to try in a GOS here in B.C. Might try up near Prince George or Vanderhoof . I’m guess will need to look at the Regulations but would think it’s going to be 6 point .
Any general information is always welcome and appreciated ! No need for your secret spot or expected

same boat here although I have taken one elk on an LEH antlerless a few years ago.... 2 other unsuccessful draws due to inexperience mostly.

I've found that most elk hunters don't really seem to want to mentor other would be elk hunters and I do understand the reasons why as it can take a few seasons to figure out good areas and sharing them would be the last thing they might want to do LOL
The areas I know that might be good are too rugged for me to venture into without another hunter along. Most of my hunting friends have limitted time off during hunting season so they set time aside for deer and moose..... elk not so much.
I did get the invite to go up to region 6 for the 6pt open season that starts at beginning of october but it seriously interferes with my annual black tail hunting. Will see what happens this fall i guess.
Sent a email to some friends that live up in 7B that harvest elk every fall so hopefully they drop an invite for a september hunt...... One of these years before i'm dead I'd like to harvest a bull elk..... it's certainly on the bucket list and am envious of those who successfully hunt these animals year after year.

You make some good points !
I think you’re right about elk hunters not wanting to take on new hunters to mentor .

I did not come from a hunting family I basically stumbled along until my knowledge on moose hunting increased and found out what worked and what did not and some good luck .

The first moose I called in during the rut and harvested made me feel like I had finally achieved a goal .

I guess maybe that’s the way to approach elk hunting

similar story for me. No hunting mentors in my family although my dad did keep firearms and enrolled us kids in outdoors programs like boy scouts. The leaders in our local group were big time outdoors enthusiasts and we got to do a lot of back country and winter campiing. I think that set me up well when i first ventured out on my own with a hunting license. It took me 5 years to successfully harvest a big game animal and I got 2 on that trip.... a blacktail deer and a black bear. Taught myself to moose hunt and learned how to call and that has brought success but Elk , I am still a novice and it's not the kind of animal I want to solo hunt with my disablities catching up to me as I get older.

3 years ago we set up over a swampy area trying to fill our moose draw. Started calling and in short order heard the shlosh of an animal moving through the swamp. Started to get ready anticipating a moose, and to our surprise out walked a 3 point elk.

Set up a few days later in another great moose spot, only to have a 5 point elk walk in on us. That is when I decided to get into elk hunting.

That spring I bought some elk calls, and started to watch video's and practice.

Next up was the first year of elk hunting that fall. While I didn't get to shoot an elk, I did get some great video of calling in a 5 point. He literally walked by me at 30 ft or less. I was hooked.

Year two had me with way more calling practice and back out there. Had some great times calling in a few bulls, but just shy of being able to shoot one. Then the last evening of the hunt it all fell into place. Was able to call in a 6 point to about 30 ft before I shot it. At the same time I had another one, that happened to be a 5 point walking in from the other direction. So 6 point on the right, and 5 point from the left. Even after 2 shots into the 6 point the 5 point was just standing there barking at me. Just a wild experience, and even more so for the 2nd year only as an elk hunter.

My motto, never too late to start, but you have to put the time in and learn the calls, no just calling. Lots of great habitat around PG, but all are tight lipped about it, and I can see why. I'm already practicing up my calls and getting ready for this fall.

right on man, I love those kinds of story's.
I self taught myself to hunt blacktails, mule deer and moose and am a proficient moose caller. I have been blessed with success most seasons since i bagged my first one years ago. I hunted mostly solo over the years and have had a "hunting crew" off n on over the years as well. Mostly solo though for deer and a few times for moose. I would still solo hunt but I am technically disabled and my wife won't let me hunt solo anymore in case I have a medical emergency. I do alright though and am still fairly able so a few years left in me to connect with an elk hehehe
I guess we all hunt where we know and have spent enough time to have an understanding of the land. Region 5-1, 3-30,3-29, 3-31 parts of region 6 and 7b and region 2 ..... i know these areas well but I haven't spent much time hunting anything around PG for some reason. I know where folks say the elk are and even have a few maps drawn up by forestry buddies but the terrain requires me to hunt with a partner.
Waiting to hear back from the folks we know in fort st john and maybe take a road trip up there this season.

Yea well moose is another whole story.
Ended up going north to ten pnt season 2 years ago. Called out a 5 pnt 1st morning. Next morning I had a 9 pint come out, again great video as he walked past me. Then blew motor on sxs, and called it early.
Went again last year, called out a 7 pnt first am, and then day 2 shot a fork horn and went home.
I got hooked 5 years ago when my son and I bagged a 5 pnt on a let, then 2 weeks later helped my daughter, and I called out a nice 11 pnt in the caribou on her leh that she bagged. She was ecstatic to say the least.
