Shooting your hat in skeet.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but whatever.

So a fellow at my local club just shot his first 25 straight in skeet.

The squad shot his hat.

I've heard of this and did a Google search and seen its been done back in the 60's but what is the original reason.

I actually emailed the skeet museum to see if I get a response.

So does anyone know the orgins?

Facts people just the facts.

Okay half truths, ahh hell bull sh!t and guesses.

What do ya got??

My best round so far is a 20 so my hats safe for now 🤠

Great question!!!! I made a phone call to a member of our gun club who has been inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame for skeet. Guess what? He didn’t even know the origins but says it was firmly established by the 70’s. Seems they also shoot hats for 50 & 100 straights and if you win a major competition you hat gets shredded also.

I’ll be asking questions tomorrow at the oldest continually operated gun club in Canada (Hamilton Gun Club). Hopefully we can dig up an answer. I think one of my hats got shot up long ago or maybe it was the mice that chewed it up for warm nesting material in the basement.

If nobody posts an answer by tomorrow evening I’ll get back to you. Stay tuned for the truth or another made up story. lol
 
My buddy always brings 2 hats to the club. A nice one that he wears to and from the range and, a well worn hat that he wears shooting. He is close to getting that 25 and doesn't want to risk having a nice hat shot up. He shoots lots of 23's. He is at the point now that if he has a miss he keeps his option until the end just to practice shooting 2 low house 8's.
 
At both my present and previous clubs we only shoot hats for 100 straight. I had a hat shot in the 80s, and participated in shooting one hat in the 80s. I haven't seen a hat shot since or witnessed a 100 straight since , just a few 75 straights some 50 straights, and a lot of 25 straights. Being the skeet chair, for seven years, I have handed out five 25 straight patches, and never a 50 or 75 straight, as those of us that are shooting 50 and 75 straight earned our patches long ago.

We only shoot a hat for the first 100, so we can only have one hat shot. But if I ever shoot 100 straight with the 410, I might take another patch, since my patches were all left on vests that were retired long ago.

We don't do a whole lot of skeet shooting a my home club but we do a lot of trap and I've participated in more than one hat killing (shooting) Lol.

I don't know the origin of the hat killin' but it's been around a lot longer than I've been shooting.

As some of you know we have a very popular youth program centered mostly around trap and we do shoot hats pretty much every summer for 25 straight and the kids love it. Well, maybe not every kid but most of them! :)
 
Got my first 25 in trap last summer, and my first 25 in skeet this spring. Had my good hat on too ! Apparently, I'm a late bloomer..just turned 65 in April LOL
I had 23's and 24's in trap over the yrs, but never a 25. Lotsa 23's in skeet...couple of straight runs of 23, but couldn't seal the deal ! Once, a couple yrs ago I shot 24 in skeet, but missed my low 8 option shot. That was all going thru my skull full bore before I pulled the trigger on shot # 25 this spring lol
Thinking...dayyuuummm, here I was, in the same predicament. This time the clay lost and I won !!
 
Thinking about the possibility of running your round of trap or skeet can really get into your head if you let it, best to just not think about it.

I shot a 25 at skeet many years ago and didn't even think about it at the time because I was giving a lesson to a couple of guys, when we finished one of my students said "hey you didn't miss any targets" and I had to think about it before I realized that he was right.
 
Aug 7 / 2022 in Edmonton I shot my one and only ATA registered 100 straight in trap, I knew I had a run going but didn't think about it, I thought I had 1 more station to go and went to change, Old Jack looked at me and said you just ran em bud, holy crap I did, it was sweet, I had another 100 straight in practice one night at our club but they are few and far between, I have had more than a few 99's and 98's but I always seem to find a way to miss one or two along the way. My old trap shooting mentor always said the greatest distance in trap is the 6" between your ears :LOL: how true, don't get in your own way just let it happen.

That's an accomplishment..... did you get your 100 straight badge?

35 years of trap and skeet shooting i have never seen anyone wearing a stetson while shooting
