Hical SKS Problem

Bought this rifle from High Caliber Services Corp. Its one of their own modified SKS with the magwell adapter. I also got them to modify 2 mags with the rifle. I dont have the tools nor skills to do the mods myself, so I thought I would buy one thats ready to go. Well, its no where ready to go.

First problem, it keeps ejecting the mags after a few rounds. So i sent it back to them and they said they fixed it.

I get the rifle back and 2nd problem appears(it was still ejecting the mags btw). After shooting a few rounds, the receiver slides forward within the stock and causes the situation in the pictures. The rear of the receiver is still retained in the stock, but the front of the rifle has walked out of it. The receiver and barrel assembly shifts forward, which means the lower handguard retainer also moves forward and eventually the lower handguard falls off.

So i send it back to them a second time. They claim they fixed it and tested it by firing over 100 rounds, but when I get it back, this issue is still here.

Now they are not answering my emails and on the rare occasion that I can get through on the phone and speak with the owner, hes saying “never seen this happen out the the 1000+ that I sold”.

Bought this thing back in mid june and it’s still not been resolved.

So, any ideas on whats wrong here? Any recommendations for gunsmith near Toronto that can fix this?

Just a couple guesses since I've never seen a HiCal 'thing'. In one of my SKSs I had an MCarbo 'light' sear spring and in the wood stock the OEM mag would 'pop open' after 1-2 shots - all the rest of ammo would fall out. That may be a similar thing with the sear spring and the mag release ? As for the action coming out of the stock, I'd look at how the 'button' on the rear of the action is locking into the stock. I now have a FT in a Tapco T-6 and it locks in fine. Maybe the HC isn't locking properly ? The Front of the Stock in your pic should be inserted in the metal 'socket' that hangs below the barrel. That should align the receiver locking button to 'clik' into place at the back of the Trigger Guard. It may need some 'persuasion' - I use a Rubber Hammer 😄
BTW, the Safety MUST be ON to Assemble and Dis-assemble the receiver into the Stock. That could even be your problem if that is not done properly ?

Glad to hear that.

The receiver is jumping out of the stock. There is either too much play on the back of the receiver or the latch/spring at the bottom back is not holding it strong enough. Check those areas and find out what the problem is.

Maybe there is no spring at the back. It is an aftermarket stock, not sure how the ATI stock works but should be an easy fix (well for me at least, sorry about that comment).

Magazines - sounds like the mag catch isn't seating properly, and as such isn't catching the slot in the side of the mag properly (try a different mag catch) or it's a magazine issue (try a diffetent magazine).

Stock - see if there's a spot inside it where you can epoxy something to push between the metal of the receiver and the stock, putting pressure to force the stock forward into the retainer. Or buy a different stock.

All of the above are pretty easy and will probably be cheaper than a gunsmith....

np and thanks, will take a look.

If it was really that simple, then wtf Hical... The product and service has really been lackluster

Yeah, for sure. Looked closer at yours - does it have some kind of proprietary mag catch? I built one four or five years ago with the Magwedge adaptor, and I'm pretty sure it took a standard AR15 mag catch. Yours, I'm not so sure....

That I’m not sure. Like I said, I didn't build or mod this rifle. It was all done by Hical Canada.

I didn’t want to have to do any work. Since the magwell is their own product, I expected them to know how to mod it and assemble the rifle.

Is the mag catch on OPs gun the hical logo? Lmao

OP did the stock come with the gun when you bought it?

I had 3 or 4 of the High Cal SKS and they all worked great. I didn't modify the mags in any way, I used stock LAR style pistol mags. So I know these rifles will work. With the magazines your mag catch might just be too loose. With your stock, look what a few other posters mentioned- Your stock isn't being properly retained. SKS have got lots of slightly different versions and you may have to play around with the stock and the triggerguard/magwell retaining system to get it right.

that particular sks stock has no forward bearing surfaces that would hold the action from doing exactly what it is doing.
I tried one of that company's stocks on an sks-d and the exact same problem occured.
a regular SKS has the lug fitting on the barrel ahead of the receiver that engages the fixed mag so if the action in the OP's case has that engagement lug, i would build up the stock inside at that location and use that lug as a "stop".
SKS wood stocks have a steel cross bar that engages the front of the receiver behind that lug so installing something similar would also work.
So the actual problem with HiCal's build is the stock they put on the gun and they really should be remedying the situation..... if whomever built it is any kind of a gun builder it should be child's play to remedy

Yes, im pretty sure its cause the stock sucks.
But Hical sells these and they charge a bunch of money for it, a portion of which is for the modification services. So I expected them to make it work...
