How do purchase items from a member with no trader rating without offending them and still ensure that you don't come out on the wrong end of the deal?

Treat it like any other deal.

I mean you got one. So only slightly better than zero. But not enough to look down at someone. So go in how you went in with your first.

I have only sold one item not face to face, the guy just trusted me. I would have been OK with a video call to go over the item for sale if they requested it.

Thank you for the smart ass answer. What made you think I was looking down on anyone?
I wouldn't deal with you.

It wasn't a smart ass answer at all.

The way you structured your post it was heavily implied that you need protection and assurances from doing a deal with a '0' feedback member.

Newsflash....there is none.

There's no guarantees against being ripped of by anyone.

Anything can happen from hacked accounts, sleeper accounts with fake feedback reviews for example.

Zero guarantees.

Never send money you cant afford to lose.

Its a gamble and if $1000 loss will spiral you into financial ruin, don't do it.

Perhaps online sales aren't in your comfort zone

Only one feedback, only been here for several months and going on how to deal with people with no feedback without getting scammed, like you need protection.

I got scammed by a member with 100 plus feedback and was on the site for a long time. Some of my best deals were zero feedbacks.

Yup we all got to start somewhere
My first purchase on the EE was for a firearm worth over 8k
It was my first time using an e transfer too
Not gonna lie I was sweating bullets but it all went good
God hates a coward…

I have zero feed back and have been around here for 20 years or so I just don't sell anything but I may sometime in the future

If you mean for firearms, it is reassuring to get the email notification from CFP Online. It is an important bit of info that suggests the seller is legit. Definitely don't send any money before the notification.
If the seller is able to provide additional images that you request then that's more evidence that he actually has the item.
Trader ratings aren't everything because accounts can be hacked so regardless of rating you should pay attention to your spidey senses. Asking for a phone conversation is usually a good idea.

I was given this advice when I started on CGN. Start small, first handful of deals $100 or less if possible and make an effort to have a phone call with the seller. This strategy worked well for me, I have been lucky to only have good transactions on this site.

I rarely take phone calls and never taken a call regarding an item Im selling.
Cell phones in my area are poor call quality.
Im also hard of hearing and just generally dislike the notion that the person calling thinks im a scammer.
Truly thats what is boils down to.
Its also an incredible waste of time you'll never get back.

I had 27 messages about a gun I was selling on gunpơst, no ####įng way would I entertain having 27 conversations about it.

Phone calls can also be hard for people dealing with social anxiety, depression, PTSD and a host of other issues.

Before people blindly jump in....none of those issues stops legal gun ownership in Canada

You talk to them, look at their post history, and work up small. If you are suddenly on here looking to buy a $4,000 scope and make a garbage offer (Not saying you are) maybe they will see you as the scammer? Just look at the other person if you were the seller and think how would you want the transaction to go if you were nervous.

The aspect of starting small is a big one. When I started out CGN was smaller, but I still tried to do primarily $5-25 parts with local people I could meet until I got 10 positive trader rating. Then I moved to larger items and shipping until I was in the 30+ positive trading rating. I know that's not as easy now, but if you plant to buy, sell and trade some amount that's the best way. I sometimes have the opportunity to buy stuff locally at yard sales and sell some of it, so I respect my trader rating.

There are obvious scammers on CGN: they're not hard to spot. Generally, other than once, I have had more issues with a few CGN sponsors (got shipped a gun many years ago with zero packing in a non-factory box, no case: it smashed around so bad it broke a Magpul magazine and had to be fixed at a gunsmith, for example, with zero f##ks given by the sponsor).

I have scammed myself by underestimating shipping (or recently, shipping went up 20% in a week between quote and getting money) and holding myself to what I quoted, more than being scammed by CGN members.

I was only 'scammed' once by a non-business member of CGN and it was someone with a high trader rating: paid for express shipping so I could get a choke for a friend's gun and get them hunting with their dead father's gun before the season ended (it was missing the choke: never found it)... and they got it shipped by snail mail with a stamp. There was no way in hell I could have gotten a shotgun choke through the mail in a letter for the price of a US stamp, and I paid for 3 day shipping for like $17. Suffice to say they didn't get hunting with that gun that season to honor their dead dad and the seller didn't care.
