Looking for some other people's experiences and recommendations for 12 gauge shotgun slugs that go well with a mossberg 590a1.
I have fired federal truball low recoil through it and it absolutely loves it. Getting 4inch groups at 50 yards off hand. Just wondering if there are recommendations for more economical slugs that I can switch to that is still decent quality out to 80 or so yards. Would like to get something I can stock up on for a little less. I have heard mixed reviews on score, challenger, s&b. Although the 00 buck from score gave decent groupings out to 30-40yards.
Thank you, and sorry if this has been discussed to many times.

I find the challenger and clever stuff to be garbage. Yeah it’s cheap …and very smoky and cycles like sh@t in my benelli M4’s. It does run ok in my 590a1’s but on occasion hard to cycle due to crimp shoulder on steel case. Winchester, federal, etc a much better way to go …

I bought a case of Rio slugs a while back and while they work good they like to lead up the barrel a lot more then the challenger and score slugs do
The box says they are 1410 fps so faster then the scores and challangers
They wernt that expensive either, about the same as the challenger and score slugs

Challenger for training....

Federal truball low recoil is most accurate in mine. I found out with slugs that the lot number is changing the p.o.i. like with everything else.

Buchshot (i know you asked for slugs) hornady black with flight controll comes out reliably ar 25 yards where you can cover all 8 pellets with your hand on a target (I wear size 13 gloves)

Game changer was adding the vortex sg to it.

Another vote for tru-ball

I think the issue is that it is a true cylinder bore. Commercial slugs are ever so slightly undersized to fit through choke constrictions so it a true cylinder bore they are a bit "wobbly". Because of the ball, the tru-ball slugs swage up into the bore a little better I think.

I had my barrel threaded to accept interchangeable chokes. Once I did that and installed an improved cylinder choke, I found that the regular old winchester 1oz slugs and the rio shells with brenneke slugs shot just as well as the tru-ball.

I think I will need to put a red dot on it to get any more precise

I was thinking of doing that for my 590, Boito Mossberg 500 clone and my Stoeger. If you don't mind me asking what did that run you cost wise and where did you get it done?

Best bet would be to grab a couple boxes of whatever is available and give them a try and see what’s most accurate. For range blasting my go to use to be Winchester value pack but they skyrocketed.

Try Clever Mirage T4 Solengo slugs. Had good results with them hitting torso sized targets at 150 yards. Both federal truball and federal power shock are very good as well. Winchester powerX slugs were decent if I remember correctly. I tried challenger, score and mili defence slugs but their accuracy wasn’t that great.

Sounds like Truball is not replaceable for the longer shots. I'll stick with them. For training I'll get some cheaper bulk. Anyone try the score competition low recoil slugs?

Thank you everyone for the advice!

I ended up needing to add the magpul sga with the cheek riser piece installed to make the dot on the viper sg line up in the center of the viewing window with my natural cheekweld. So budget fot that as a add on to the project unless you are already running it......
