Who is Using a 28 Gauge, This 2025-26 Hunting Season

No/$1500/Grade 1

I sold a mint never fired set (1 & 5) and a 5 with Briley thinwalls with 250 rds through it in 28 2-3 years ago.
No point buying another.
Makes sense.Never had a Grade V myself.Every so often, I get the urge to get one,but with what they want for them theses days, I doubt I ever will.:)

Just one...it's all I need. A winchester 101...I think I posted a pic of it before? 26" IC/M

The Model 101 guns are nice.I have one 28 gauge M/F and a 28 gauge Quail special with choke tubes.

That gun of yours is a real 28 gauge beaut. You must be a person with a lot of self control ,to be able to just stay with only one 28 gauge gun.:)

Might of asked before, but what do you usually use the gun on?

I've only shot ruffed grouse with it to date but am hoping to expand my horizons and kill a few greenheads, canadas and huns with it going forward.

That sounds like a good idea, about using the Model 101 on other game. What would you use for 28 gauge ammunition if you go after ducks?I have not used the 28 gauge on ducks since lead was banned.Been thinking of using it again for ducks.Thinking of getting one of the new 3 inch 28 gauge guns, but also using my 2 3/4 inch 28 gauge guns as well.Thinking of Bismuth.Believe Kent and Federal make a 28 gauge Bismuth shell.

I have two 28 gauge shotguns, a Grulla Consort SxS with 27" barrels, and I have 30" 28 gauge barrels for my K-20, for skeet. I have taken over 100 pheasants , some sharptails, and Huns with the Grulla.
Sounds like your 28 gauge has been bringing home some fine meat for the table. The box birds excluded .LOL

For myself ,the longest barrel I have used on a 28 gauge gun is a 28 inch barrel.I was from back in the old days ,when 28 gauge guns had shorter barrels. Now a days, the longer barrels on the 28 gauge, seem to be in vogue .:)

How do you find the longer barrels in use ,compared to the shorter barrels?

If you can find Bismuth I’d be buying whatever you can afford cuz there won’t be any for quite a while! China is not selling Bismuth to the USA so that ends ammo production!!

I actually prefer longer barrels on my shotguns, my 16 gauge Grulla SxS has 29" barrels, but the 28 gauge Grulla was on consignment at a great price, so I bought it with the 27" barrels. I had an AYA #2 with 28" barrels, a Citori 525, and a Citori 625 Feather, both with 28" barrels, all in 28 gauge, before the Grulla.

What do you find that works better for yourself, with the longer barrels over the shorter barrels in the 28 gauge? Most of my hunting is done in thicker stuff,so I find the short barrels are easier to manoeuvre.:)

That does not sound good at all.:(
I found out this fall. Boss ammunition had to switch its waterfowl loads because of bismuth shortage. China has stopped selling bismuth as well as cellulose which are used in making gun powders. Partial reason of powder supplies and pricing. Boss is now loading some kind of copper pellet that apparently performs like lead but not toxic!

Bismuth is non-existent pretty much nowadays. Sny you find is what suppliers have leftover so grab what you can when and where you can. I've been buying up all the old original Bismuth No-Tox loads by Eley that are loaded to lower pressures I can find for use in my old SxS' plus some of the more modern loads that my newer guns can handle. I came across 7-25 rd boxes of 28 ga #4 Bismuth No-Tox loads. Cost me a few $ but I have enough to enjoy a few solo greenhead hunts each fall now for a few seasons.

I find 28" barrels pretty much ideal for my uses, which vary from open fields to the thick stuff, where I have to use the beeper on my dogs collar, to find him on point. I shoot 30" barrels for skeet, and 32" barrels for sporting clays.

I bought a good supply of Kent Bismuth for use at Camp Wainwright for sharptails, I likely have enough to last me at least five years.

I have heard of the new copper pellets that Boss has,but also heard that while they meet U.S, standards for the environment ,they do not meet Canadian standards.
