Spent three months dry firing off a tripod standing while holding tight AF with a 30x scope to build strength and shrink the wobble zone.
First rounds fired since December. The goal was 1moa but 2,3,5 has changed that.image_cropper_33A72541-1945-4FF6-B354-B59992EECE1F-3251-0000017E28130C0B.jpeg

I’m using the same targets at 100. My goal is to confirm zero from all positions. Prone, kneeling, standing. As we speak I have my rifle out and trying to perfect cant. Something seems out of wack.
I use an angle finder to perfectly level my rifle in a soft jaw'd bench vise. I then use the angle finder on the top of my upper turret to level the scope; and keep referring to it as I tighten the rings.

As a side note, its almost impossible to "see" anything under 2 degrees from level with the eye or a non-precision bubble level...

You would be very surprised how much of your issues may stem from the scope only being 1 or 2 degrees out... hence why you likely have a bubble on the side of your optic...

Cheers!

This is how I’m levelling recently. It’s a bit easier with a chassis and arca rail, but set the straight edge on the bottom of the foregrip, then move your straight edge to the flat on the bottom of your turret. Verify it’s not moving while tightening rings. In the second pic I couldn’t hold the level properly and take a pic, but I think the idea is easy. It seems to be working for me so farIMG_6457.jpegIMG_6458.jpeg

If you’re using a traditional hunting stock… put it in a vice and slide the other end of your tool on the flats of your action. IMG_6459.jpegIMG_6460.jpeg

My issue is my brain I’m thinking. What I thought was level looking through my reticle wasn’t actually level. I put my send-it level on and where it said level wasn’t where my eye thought level was. I confirmed today that I have to trust my send it level I guess. I may level it again and confirm my crosshairs against a plumb bob just to be sure.IMG_6461.jpeg

Each position will more than likely have a different zero in each position .
As far as having the gun perfectly level in each position , your natural alginment will not have a level rifle either because of your body's contour.
This is why rifles stocks used in Free Rifle competition are fully adjustable for LOP, pitch, Cheek offset cant ,etc.

Yeah, that’s what I’m trying to overcome. I’m going to work on body position or whatever I have too overcome that. Maybe it’s the way I’m managing recoil? I’m probably heading out tomoorow and I plan on working with the level and trying more of a free recoil. And I might bring one more set of weights to give the rifle a bit of a pull down on the barrel end instead of perfectly balanced.

This game is never-ending.

It is not reliable that the top of the elevation turret is perfectly perpendicular to tue vertical stadia on a reticle.

If u want perfect level of both rifle and reticle, u need to level the rifle by any good quality standard method and then level the reticle to a known vertical or horizontally level reference.

Even after u have done that tho, the most important thing is to shoot level. And that requires a visible level that is matched to the reticle. The rifle level is not even super relevant and in reality, many people cant the rifle when it is shouldered comfortably anyway.

Many high end shooters have a deliberate cant although this may be declining now that butt pad adjustability has gotten so good.

I use an MDT send it level and mate it to my scope reticle as the priority.

Your natural alignment is far more important than if your rifle level.
Concentrate on eyeing up the target, mounting the rifle, and closing your eyes momentarily, then opening them .
If you are sighting low
( standing position) Move your left foot back a bit. If high, move it slightly Foreard.
Of the sight is to the right , the rear foot gets moved to the right slightly , and vice versa.

The tighter you hold the rifle the more stress you put into your position , which will effect your shot because of your natural alignment.
A tripod will mask any misalignment in your natural alignment.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll add that to my list of Tom foolery tomorrow.

Let me know when you need some help with your prone and kneeling position help. As I think you know, I have had some excellent coaching and a bit of experience shooting three position competition in both smallbore and fullbore😁

Lets do hockey pucks at 1000 and see how loose treats ya. ROTFLMAO. A hard hold minimizes change in POA before the boom. It takes time and certain level of physical fitness to master.
Zero doesn't change between positions:
Tripod zero with one elbow on the hood of my truck at 1/2 mile holding tight AF.
2.5 inch circle touched up from sitting tripod hits.
I just eyeball the bottom of the reticle to the bolt shroud, IMG_9874.jpeg

Two rando shots at a gven distance does not an expert make.
You obviously kmow so much more than people like David Tubb or Bill Pullam and Frank Hanekrat.
But then, I have seen you dismiss the findings of true experts like Cortina, Litz, and the basically the whole Hornady engineering team, so carry on.

This is fundamentally incorrect.

it’s actually really hard to correct your statements without coming off as a ####.

I highly suggest you forget everything you “know” and take an intro class.
