Bought first handgun. What #2?

Me and a co-worker both bought Ruger 22 5.5" Stainless Steel pistols today from P&D.

Unfortunatly we are not taking the RPAL until April 27 so probably won't be able to take the "twins" out until mid June.

I am now hoping to buy a 1911 before June and have them shipped togther.
I don't want to spend more than 900-1000 so I've narrowed it down to these 2:

Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Mil-Spec in SS:

The one i am looking at has wood grips with the SA logo. This is the only pic I could find.

They are pretty close in price. Any opinions?

You can pay for it and they will store it for you. They won't ship it until you have the RPAL number and can complete the registration process. They had the guns in stock so I didn't want to risk having to wait for them later.

I had some unexpected cash so I wanted to get it paid for before I blew it on something else.
 
Between those two I'd get the Smith & Wesson...better sights, a beavertail safety, and a straight mainspring housing.
 
Between those two, I would go with the Smith.

But why don't you buy an STI Spartan instead. Awesome gun, very accurate, very strong-builded. It will cost you about 760$ and you will still have some cash to buy some more amos to shoot it. It's a nice gun, ready to shoot out of the box and you could make some nice improvments on it.

By the way, when you have a budget on a gun, I suggest that you always put a few hundreds more on it so you don't end up a few months later thinking I should have get this one or that one...

Thanks. I am leaning toward the Smith. Thats good to know about the sights because thats one thing I don't know much about.

I will take a look at the STI as well, but I am set on stainless steel.
 
Get a Kimber, they sell em where you live (TSE). It'll maybe cost you $200 more that you won't ever regret spending. You picked an awesome 22, match it with an awesome 1911.

Just my opinion.

TSE only shows a Gold Cup II on their site and its $2089. I like the looks of the Kimber Custom TLE II and it's $1189 at Wholesale Sports. What makes the Kimber better than the S&W?

I really need to get to TSE and shoot a few of these.
 
My first gun was a Kimber Warrior from TSE, hands down THE BEST buying experience I've ever had, they took me seriously when I phoned and told them to hold one for me, I purchased it, and I didn't know *&^% All about 1911's at the time, the guy took me threw field stripping, cleaning, and maintenance right there in the store, I've been a loyal customer ever since (when I can, its 3 hours away and I still drive down there JUST to go.)

Thats good to know. I am going to try and get down there this weekend. I think I may end up buying my range membership there as well. It's the most expensive place to join, but you can use all of their guns. Only drawback is you have to buy their overpriced ammo when you are shooting their guns, but I understand it's how they make their money. But you do get a 20% discount on the ammo.

S&W makes some of the best 1911s out there (except for high-end stuff like Ed Brown and Les Baer of course). Unlike the Spartan, S&W is not made out of castings. Nor is it made in the Philippines. Personally, if I were to buy something made in the Philippines, it would be a pair of socks, maybe even a T-shirt.....But when it comes to guns, I wouldn't go for something made by a guy who gets three rice patties per week for his labor.

STI is made in the Philippines?!
 
After you've picked up the ejected brass often enough you'll start to appreciate a revolver, especially a long barrelled revolver like the S&W 686 if you like accuracy. Chambered for 38 Special and 357 Magnum.
