Trap/Skeet gun

Have transitioned from bench shooting to trap/skeet. I have a 28” Browning citori O/U handed down to me but was looking for a spare or dedicated shotgun for this sport. Right now only doing 5 stands but hoping to try others once I build up the confidence.

I’ve heard 30-32” is ideal, was thinking of getting either a:

Browning 725 Sport with adjustable stock

Or Beretta A400 Multitarget

Both in ideally 32” any suggestion or other recommendations?

Barrel length is a minor consideration. Years ago, people shot skeet with a 26 in barrel, and trap with 28 or 30 in barrel. Your Citori should serve you well, assuming it has the proper cast. Dedicated trap guns are the oddball as they have a high comb, thus canting the barrel slightly upward. This causes the gun to shoot high, which allows the shooter to more easily see a rising trap bird. This feature is not well suited to the other clay disciplines.
Getting a gun with an adjustable comb would offer maximum utility and potential to optimize gun fit.

Nothing wrong with Browning or Beretta. I would add Perazzi. There are some exceptional deals on a couple in GPost. Italian guns handle differently than Brownings. I find Brownings be a bit clumsy compared to Italian guns but what do I know?

And then there are the German shotguns, Blaser and Kreighoff. I find my F-3, to handle very different than my Brownings, or my K-20.

I just looked at Perazzi are almost double and then some, unless I’m looking wrong haha
 
Beretta and Browning doubles have different fit, due to stock dimensions, and different feel due to receiver depth differences. People tend to gravitate to one or the other. In my case, Beretta.
Given the amount of money you are about to spend, I would suggest you try each. Perhaps someone at your club can oblige...

I was in the same spot as you. I shot rifle all my life with very limited exposure to 5 stand. When I retired I started shooting skeet with my old Citori field gun but soon found the comb too low and it gave my face a good beating as a result. Learning the game with a gun like that was near impossible.

Fast forward .... Last week I took in a used Browning Citori CX with 30" bbls and more importantly an adjustable stock. Once I got that stock figured out I found that it fits a lot better than the old one and is a lot easier to shoot. Very pleased with that shotgun and looking forward to learning the game and improving my skills that lack sorely right now.

Best thing to do is shoot that Citori for a while at both trap, skeet and sporting along with 5 stand. After you get a feel for things and watch other shooters, possibly try a couple of their guns, then maybe you can make a better decision on what fits and shoots well for you and whether 1 gun will do it all? Good luck with it!
 
While prices have gone up, there are still some great deals to be found in used shotguns. I paid $5600 for my F-3 Vantage with adjustable comb, with 1000 rounds fired. I still see some lower mileage target guns for $2500 or so , and $4000 gives you a decent selection.
 
Would suggest avoiding a 32” barreled A400 as lot of gun to get moving in a semi. With limited experience the Beretta multi target is a gun best left for an experienced shooter as the available adjustments will have you second guessing if misses are you or the settings.

Spend some time with your O/U and try what guns you are able to prior to putting 4K into a multi target or a sporting O/U.

Recently got Beretta A300 Ultimas in 12 and 20 gauge to use for wet weather days. Find the triggers much better on those than the A400 Sporting I had. Bargain gun with available settings and set both to a 15” LOP with included spacers.

if you actually plan to shoot on a regular basis stay away from a semi altogether they are adapted to clay shooting not designed for
with the correct o/u with a adjustable stock you will be able to use it in the field the resin for 30" bbl's is to smooth out your swing the targets are predictable so you will learn about rhythm when shooting and fallow thru and a few other things
what you don't want is a ported gun !!!
also don't get your self twisted up over chokes
before 1978 there were 10's it thousands of 100's straights shot with fixed chokes and pump guns and even sxs's
