$15,000 Valmet 88 Rifle - M78 LMG, Excellent Condition, Bipod, Original Leather Sling

I’m already likely to receive a mild frowning for this month’s gun spending.

My only saving grace is she’s 5 months pregnant with our sixth… and I can run WAY faster scared than she can waddle angry.

🤰 🏃
Better start saving for a bus lol.
I made a deal with my wife. I buy her a Chinese crested powder puff puppy I buy myself another new beretta. Cheaper than kids and sellable lol. Anyway congrats

$16k + at last time I cared to look (it’s been a bit). Maybe some lip action to smooth the deal. And if (IF) you’re nice…

Maybe.

Before anyone starts in on “luck” just realize I took a loan (from those pirates at Wells Fargo no less) at prices that still turn heads.

Instead of questioning folks with the means to manage their own affairs, some of you arguably need to get a good deal heavier in the ass

Yikes! My Tommy-Built chopped and plastic-welded Receiver conversion was quite a bit cheaper at about $5K. Still pricy for what it is (registered as a UMP), but FAR less than those movie guns fetch. There are still relative bargains out there that will give you the crappy, heavy-recoiling, flexing Buttstock experience of firing a UMP-45. They are much better handling in 9mm, but still far-outclassed by the MP5 that it was supposed to replace at less expense. Save your $$ is my advice....

This was one of the 2 guns without the questionable provenence.
Purchased from a dude (once prominent board member here) who made his living teaching vehiclular operations like high CG to orgs like the UN.
Long gone from my lockup Im afraid.

They did a really nice job on the receiver hook for the stock

Most USC conversion kits missed that detail.

That’s funny!

My wife drives a Tahoe and we just bought a newish AWD sprinter van for the nanny to use.

Going anywhere is indeed burdensome. Add in a friend or two - YIKES!
Hope this gun gets to meet the guy with the $ and desire to own it!
I’m actually surprised it’s stayed listed this long.

I mean it’s in the C.C. That’s something!

From Grok: The Valmet Hunter M78 (along with the Valmet Hunter and Valmet Hunter Auto) is explicitly listed as exempt from the AK-47 prohibition in Canada’s Criminal Code regulations.

What happens when it gets added to "The List"
That gets a bit awkward considering the government previously removed the Valmet Hunter series from prohibited classification because it was determined to be suitable for hunting purposes.

Also, the unconfirmed rumor that the government had supplied the same rifle to Inuit hunters - tho I can find no factual evidence of this.

The Liberal government seems to be able to survive a lot of egg (or shoe polish) on their face, but do they want to volunteer for another round of scrutiny?

Their next scandal is just around the corner.

So heres a question...If Valmet (or others) started making these again...Identical...would they be allowed in as the same FRT ?
This question has been asked before. Beretta, the current holder of the trademark are not interested. The machinery is long sold and potentially resold. And nothing short of valmet made in finland will suffice.

Eventually someone is going to put in an offer because it is a great reputable store...
Last transaction I helped facilitate sold a m78 308 mint condition for 11,500 so they are not far off and with reputation / security that adds a lot of value...

A very nice rifle , with a bit of a mysterious background ; but for 15 grand , I guess I will have to stick with an SKS . From Google......

While the AK-47 and all its variants were classified as prohibited weapons in Canada during the 1990s, the federal government explicitly carved out an exception in the Firearms Reference Table (FRT) for three specific Valmet models:
  • Valmet M78
  • Valmet Hunter
  • Valmet Hunter Auto [1]
Why was it exempted?
The exception exists because the Canadian federal government had previously purchased and distributed a significant number of Valmet rifles to Indigenous communities (primarily in northern Quebec and Labrador) for subsistence hunting and land claim settlements. When the 1990s gun bans were drafted, prohibiting the rifles would have required the government to seize its own recently distributed hunting tools from Indigenous peoples, risking severe legal and political backlash. To avoid this, the Justice Department declared these specific models "suitable for hunting purposes" and excluded them from the ban.

How along ago was this, when you helped facilitate the sale. Was $11,500 before or after tax?

It's not the only one. It is one of very few. And so what, there are loads of people currently in possession of Type 81 LMGs that cost a tenth of that. The only difference is the Valmet can legally be bought and sold. Functionally, the Valmet is a degree nicer than the Type 81 and thats it.

If the argument goes to, the Valmet can be taken out and shot, when collectors item become so expensive, actually using them reduces their value and so they cease to be that useful thing and simply become an expensive widget that can't be used for fear of destroying their value. It may as well be a dewat at that point.

That is very possible.

Its not. It is a stamped AK with a better build quality.

I have multiple 12x classes and so can buy way more interesting things than that at way better price. If I really wanted an AK, it would certainly be within my reach. I just think AKs are garbage. 🤷‍♂️

I recently grabbed a very nice G3 for $2800.

Capitalism 101 requires demand. Scarcity only drives up prices if demand is there. A scarce item that nobody wants will still be cheap.

Exactly.

And once all these idiotic bans work their way through to fruition, Type 81 LMGs should be fairly easy to acquire.
I also have the 12x classes but while i can buy and sell to others of the same class none of us can shoot them legally. 12-6 is the exception.
I have way more than the price of this Valmet tied up in iron that can’t legally leave the house. Not really too sure how bright that really is to be honest. At least you can take the Valmet out and shoot it.
Having said that, i like my collection and if someone wants to spend 15 k on a shooter have at it. Hopefully it shows up at my range and i can take a look at it.
Hang in there.

Ahem. If you live in an area where discharge is not prohibited, yes you can. Only the newly prohibited are not to be discharged anywhere under the terms of the amnesty for individuals.

I don't want to sidetrack this topic though. Feel free to call me out in another thread if you need - there are several on this subject.

I think the valmets went a bit nuts pricewise, but if someone wants to pay that much, I won't try to convince thrm otherwise. I sold my only m78 to get a rare m1a... Even so, no regrets.

Looks like a lot of butt hurt posts from the shooters that are way under the income bracket this rifle requires….lol.
Instead of just moving on, they gotta let the other shooters know that they can’t afford it.
A Valmet has been on my list for a long time…….and would get more use than the 500NE double, at a fraction of the price!

Exactly.
I feel the same way towards unwashed, flyover folks with carbooraters.🤣
