Cheapest way to get into nrl22?

What’s the cheapest route to get into nrl22? I picked up a cz457 for myself, but I’d like to add another for my 11 year old. Obviously another cz457 would be ideal, but what could a guy get away with in a shorter stock configuration that would actually shoot ok?

Maybe one of those cz barrelled actions I’ve seen for $800-900? And buy a cheap stock from the buy sell? Upgrade the stock to a chassis later on?
 
Considering all the other 'kit' that seems to be necessary to shoot nrl22, the rifle is just a fraction
Have seen Ruger, Bergara, Savage do well
 
You could buy from EE - maybe not a CZ for your son ? He may not be capable of 'using' the accuracy at first anyway.
 
Staying with the CZ line will let you share spare mags, etc. Have a look at the 455, as there is still significant aftermarket support, while coming in a bit cheaper. There are chassis options that will allow you to adjust LOP, but honestly I'd just buy a second stock off the used market and cut it down to whatever fits.

Scope wise, your cheapest FFP scope that is still usable at the full range of magnification is would likely be something like the Arken EPL line. You could look at SFP options, but I doubt they'll come in much cheaper and he'll likely outgrow them a lot faster.
 
the cheapest way to deal with this of course is to have him use yours but as you have mentioned it's a little bit too long for him. at 11 years old though how long is that situation really going to last? Buying a shorter stock is like buying shoes for an 11 year old it'll be outgrown in 6 months.
Saying that if you really wants his own rifle and you want him to have it.. as mentioned about that Scorpio is actually a surprising little tack driver. They have them at GoTenda or another budget issue that has lots of aftermarket support would be a Savage Mark 2. both of those rifles will do just fine out to 200 yards. I personally prefer the B22 as the mags are rotary and not too bad to load once you get the swing of it versus The Mark 2 which is insanely accurate but the mags present an issue with abuse and time. Oh then there's the aftermarket Mark 2 mags which solve that issue and you just get to spend more and more money just like everything else in this crazy hobby.
 
Also take a close look at the Tikka T1X with an Athlon Argos 6x24 . That's easily a lifetime rifle for NRL 22 and pretty much everything else that you would ever need a 22 for..
 
If you can find one a Cz 457 scout may be the option. It’s a youth model stock on the Same 457 action with a 16” barrel.

Usually one of the cheapest 457 rifles but they can be hard to come by and sell out fast.

I have one for my kids and it shoots every bit as good as my Thumbhole laminate. It’s small but I can shoot it just fine as a big guy.

Benefit here and why I opted for one. Is share mags with my rifles AND When my kids out grow the stock it will drop right into any other Cz 457 stock.

A 455 scout if you can find one would also be a good choice; very upgradeable as he grows, but a bit hard to find. I found one and will send you the link.

decent practice ammo is going to be 10¢ apiece, good target ammo will be 20¢, best high end is where now? 30¢ each

cheapest rifle for the nrl22 games is going to be an OE option in a stock that you won't be afraid of modifying to make work or an OE chassis like the Ruger PR that things can be bolted to. Making it fit and making it what you need is part of the fun, don't worry about resale value

was going to mentio the MDT Oryx as a good starter chassis thinking it fit numerous rimfires but I see a few are missing from the list of fitment

Boxhitch has some good ideas... and coincidentally, Spectre Ballistics is just releasing a 457 Chassis that you can a an AR adjustable buttstock to. That would solve any length of pull issues and you could use share the same gun and have a super easy adjust on the fly without breaking the bank or having to buy a second rifle... I don't see it listed on their site yet, but they are a forum commercial sponsor

As an interim solution I’m going to pull some spacers out of the xrs chassis and see how I shoot with it short and go from there. It’s a bit too much effin around to swap it around between shooters.

Long term the I’m going to have to commit to a proper rifle which will probably be another cz457 in an mdt.

Ooohh...CCI SV in my Tikka and 457's seems to fall apart after 75 yards (like 2" groups @ 100) (its very decent @ 50 Y as most ammo is) He'll need something better than that.... but you know... decent ammo for 100-150 yards is either rare at the affordable end or $25 + per box for competition grade.
