Remington 597 vs Ruger 10/22?

Where is that "kickin on a dead horse" button? :cheers:Buying both is always a good thing. If you are inclined to go with 597 I would recommend to spend a few bucks and get "yellow jacket" deal. It is bit expensive but there will be scope mount installed, absolutely beatiful stock and heavy barrel.
 
Ya the yellow jacket does look good, but actually I like the TVP if I'm going to spend that kind of money because it has the picatinny rail, and the yellow is a bit bright for me, but I really like the way the stock fits in your hands, and helps balance the weight of the HB. Good idea. lol, just when I was trying to keep things on the less expensive side, here I am speding $500+ on a .22

You may think about using the search function then. Everything you want to hear has already been said many times, that's what the search function is for.
 
No that's cool, he's right and I'm just lazy to tell the truth!
The first thing I put in my post was "I'm sure this has been discussed before...", so I knew it was all out there already, I just wanted the answers to come a little easier is all.
 
I've owned a few of both; these are my opinions on the rifles...

Bottom line is this - The Remington 597 is superior in design in every way (except for the 10rnd magazine that is included with the rifle).

The one hitch though is that the Ruger will function flawlessly out of the box. The Remington will need a thorough cleaning and reassembly to get it working flawlessly (packing grease is like glue); one of my guide rods was also over torqued out of the box which didn't allow the bolt to close properly (resulting in many many light primer strikes).

But running clean and smooth, the Remington 597 is more reliable (less stove pipes) and more accurate. However, the Ruger can go longer without a thorough cleaning (looser tolerances).

The Ruger is also easier to strip. The Remington is a pain until you get the knack for the recoil springs (there's two).
The Ruger also has an aluminium trigger housing (very nice). The Remington's is plastic (cheap - but it is a lot less).

Before Remington released the 30rnd magazines I'd have said get a Ruger 10/22... but now there is no reason at all to go 10/22 (unless you like spending more money) - Get the 597 ;)

I don't mind saying over and over again. Remington 597 is better designed rifle. It is more accurate, more reliable and just plain more fun to shoot. Every product has its time and peak in its popularity, 1022 is a goner. Ruger can't keep cashing on 40-years old design, time to come up with something new and hopefully better. If they can that is.
 
I purchased a 597 earlier yesterday and mounted my 9x scope on it. I'm heading to the range tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes... :D
 
I like the wood on the 10/22 (even though I'll probably land up replacing the stock), but I may just pick up a 597 anyhow.

Edit: The 597 would be "in addition to, not "in lieu of"! ;)

hey guys, i am thinking of getting the 597 as well....what is the "yellow jacket" deal? what online retailers sell them or which do you suggest? ;)

They're pretty much available everywhere now. The going price seems to be around $439. Try: SIR, Wholesale Sports, Russell Sports, Elwood Epps....
 
I like my 10/22 the way it is with aftermarket barrel, stock and trigger compents. I will never sell it. It was fun to put together. Its looks and shoots great. But if I could go back in time I would have bought a CZ varmint.
