6mm BR sizing issue

Hello Everyone,

I picked up a 6mm BR a little over a year ago. It has been excellent. I have reloaded around 150 rounds so far with no issues. I was just attempting to load some 103 ELDX, just to try something that might work for hunting. When I went to seat the bullets some of them will slide right into the cases. I was shooting Lapua Scenars previously, and they seemed fine, but I noticed I do have a few cases that they will slide into also. I am assuming that my answer here is a bushing die?

On the barrel is it stamped .272 neck, and my research back before I picked it up means I can use factory brass without turning necks. Does that sound correct?

I guess for use here. This is a fun gun for me, not competing in competition, just working on LR skills and practice. I might use it hunting as well, as it is super accurate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just size the neck more. You should have at least 1-2 thou neck tension or more. A bushing die would help but your current die should work, does it have an expander ball ?

My current die is sizing the whole neck of the case, but loose on the ELDX. I can’t lower the die more or it will push the shoulder back.

Expander ball is the nob on the end of the de-capping pin that expands the case neck on the way up out of the case after being sized, it may be too wide for your cases.

Try sizing a case with the expander ball removed. The case neck should be a few thou tighter. If that is the situation, then you can just get a more narrow expander ball.

You could also put the expander ball/ decapping rod into an electric drill and sand it down a couple thou with a fine sand paper if your comfortable doing that.
 
I am familiar with what it is, I just haven’t checked this particular die, as I had not had an issue previously.

I will check it out, but confused why some brass holds bullets and others don’t.

Repeated firings and sizing will work harden the brass and your brass has a variety of firings. Annealing the brass will make it more consistent.

Are you bumping the shoulders at all? Or trying to maintain chamber dimensions?
 
You never said which cases had the loose necks. Different lots? Exposure to different pressures?

You should bump the shoulders a couple thou. That might fix everything if you are only partially engaging the die with the brass.

Try what Camoman said about sanding the expander ball a bit with a drill. I’ve done it and it works well.

You need to push the shoulder back to get consistent sizing of the case. Just turn the die in a little bit more until you get those loose necks tightened up and you will be okay.
If you want to see just how much you need to size the neck down, remove the firing pin, exactor and ejector out of the bolt and chamber a fired, unsized case , then turn the die down ever so slightly until the bolt closes with almost no pressure on that case.
That will give you the amount of shoulder set back ( or shoulder bump as some call it) to get enough tension on your fired cases .

It’s possible some of the brass have turned necks and this is causing your problem.
Segregate the brass that do not hold the bullet after resizing .
Measure their neck OD with a bullet seated and compare to brass that holds the bullet , OD when bullet is seated.
This will help you confirm the thin necks…
