I've seen a common theme on this forum of people talking about high shipping costs.
Shipping from southern Ontario to the West Coast is almost as far as it gets distance-wise, for shipping. This factors in to canada post costs.
Any parcels going to somewhere remote like Nova Scotia will be really expensive to ship regardless of how far they have to go.
Also Canada post is more expensive than it used to be. Most businesses that I am aware of are charging cost, or under cost, to ship. I've worked in a business that shipped all over Canada and our cost to send a small six inch padded envelope was usually around $20-25 not including the cost of the envelope ($1-$2), the wages cost to pick and pack the order, and the wages cost for dropping it off at the post office.
Places that offer super cheap shipping on everything are building the shipping cost into the markup on their items. For example I know of a Canadian retailer that ships even large items for $10-15 to anywhere in Canada. They use Can Post. This means the item has enough markup that the majority of the profit is intact even if they have to eat $30-40 (or more) in shipping cost.
Actual operating cost (shipping, plus packaging supplies, plus wages, plus fuel) for a business that has moderate volume is about $25 minimum (and up) for the smallest parcel to go anywhere with Canada post. The farther it goes, and the heavier and larger the item is, the more it costs. The lower the business' volume is, the higher the cost per parcel is for the business.
Not to be inflammatory, but haven't you guys ever shipped a rifle to someone when you have sold it on here or other sites? I've personally paid $75+ a number of times to ship a rifle via Can Post. I've paid over $100 at least once. All depends on where it is going.
