Ruger M77 .358 Win Carbine

• picked up a BNIB stainless .358 Win Hawkeye carbine https://www.ruger.com/products/HawkeyeHunter/specSheets/67107.html
• 16.6" barrel, rather nice stock & red recoil pad
• always wanted a production .358 Win M77 finally got one
• got Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x20mm or Leupold FX-II 4x33mm to install
• handloading experience with my .358 Win BLR got some ideas results to follow
• Ruger production history of the .358 Win shows few & far between

NICE like it a LOT And my only complaint of that rifle is the SH*tty recoil pad -Ruger being using them for 50 plus years - there GARBAGE !

That's an awesome rifle!! Short barrels love fast powder and that bore/case combo will get good speed.

Had 3 in 358 at once a few years ago. Tang safety, BLR hang mag and a Ruger No1 B with custom barrel. Sure did enjoy them but they’re all gone and I don’t seem to long for them anymore. TAC is a wonder powder in them but always had great accuracy with H4895.

• decided on Leupold FX-II 4x33mm in low height ring mounts #3 front & #4 rear
• prefer scope mounted low & as far forward as possible
• has short throat similar to my .358 Win BLR
• guessing max loads muzzle speeds maybe 80 fps less than my 20" barrel BLR
• so 250gr @ 2200 fps & 310gr @ 2000 fps

All we have for working on loads for now. Sell me one of those silver Leupolds you have squirreled away. I hear ya, kinda ruins the vibe of such a nice rifle.

I've been having good results with IMR3031 and 200gr Hornady SPs. Good accuracy and easy to hit 2500fps.

H335 got up to pressure very quickly with 200s but seemed to be a smoother curve up with 250gr Speers.

That bbl length would be a deal breaker for me. To short for proper handling and blasty for my liking.

22 or 23" would be the sweet spot for me.

Very nice rifle. Pictures don’t do it justice. I held one at reliable Langley yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at the looks and how it handled.

The barrel profile threw me off at fist because it looked like it would be extremely front heavy.
The gun actually balances very nice and once its scoped would have great handling. The weight in the barrel made it feel like the barrel was longer but the whole gun weight felt about 6.5lbs. I think Ruger put some thought into this setup. If I had some extra fun money I would have purchased for my elk hunt in Sept but my .338 fed will continue to get the nod for that hunt.

I have two Ruger .358’s one Hawkeye 22” and a Frontier, they are both very accurate, the 16” Frontier loves 250’s with 40 grains of IMR4198.

What kind of velocity do you get in the 16” barrel?

Pretty much medium heavy barrel scale says 8.6 lbs scoped & slinged.

Range time next week ~2000 fps mv with 310gr Woodleigh should be doable.

Typical LC6 trigger pull weight of about 5 lbs need to fix that like on my other M77's.

Those 310’s look cool. Always wanted to try them in my 35 Whelen.

The only thing that would make these 16” rugers even better would be the use of suppressors in this country.
