30-06 Mauser Actions

Hi All,

It's my first post here!

I'm looking for a CRF 30-06, and I like the look of the old Mauser actions, and I find the flag safety really handy since I shoot left handed. Do you guys have opinions on the better action? It seems old Husqies are easy to find, along with some FN actioned rifles. I think the commercial actions are the way to go for a general purpose hunting rifle, but what about the Husqvarna CRF actions compared to the FN? Are used Mausers worth the extra money?

I'd like to have a reliable project/shooter for under $1K. I have a fair bit of woodworking experience to fix or modify stocks, and I have a machine shop, so small fixes/mods are not a issue. (Although I'm not a trained gunsmith).
 
Depending which Husqvarna that you buy, some actions were made by FN. FN also made some 30-06 for the Belgian Military - circa 1950 - in 30-06 - likely that last run of Military Mauser actioned rifles made anywhere or by anyone.

I am assuming that "FN" and "Fabrique Nationale" are the same entity - that may no longer be correct.
 
Which ones are worth looking out for? Are the Husqvarna made actions really that much lighter duty than the FN M98? Does it even matter if I'm just running regular factory loads?
 
The FN commercial actions are excellent. Most all of the rifles sold by Intersurplus are good. Some are not set up for scope mounting.
Many members here report that the rifles are generally better than their descriptions.

Thanks, I've never actually bought a used gun online, and that did have me worried. Scope mounting shouldn't be an issue, drilling and tapping is the kind of work I'm comfortable doing and tooled up to do.
 
I guess I have "sporterized" a number of military Mauser rifles - you will find that the original bolt handles (straight or curved down) are not "scope friendly" - typically you will want to cut off and re-weld a new handle - some got the "forging" blocks and re-forge the existing handle, although that often ends up shorter than desired. I think the original receiver and barrel tendon threads had 55 degree slope to them although North American machinists usually use 60 degree cutters and that seems to work.
 
Is there a major difference in the quality of the barrels between an FN barrel and a Husqvarna? Assuming I'm buying a commercial FN action.

I've done a fair bit of reading on them, but I figured guys on here might have some experience with them, and with the Intersurplus rifles in particular. I appreciate all the help/info.

I have an old Mauser 98 from a South American Army.

The bore is pitted, but it shoots better than I can.

I also have my father’s hunting rifle, a Husqvarna, he never missed an animal with it.

My younger brother has several Huskies that he wouldn’t trade for the world.

Find one you like, and enjoy!

I prefer the commercial models without the stripper clip thumb slot. Why intentionally weaken the action?
 
It also redirects gases from the bolt shroud in the event of catastrophic failure

OP seems a bit confused or maybe it's just me

All 98 will handle 30-06 pressure

The commercial mausers made by hva with swept back bolt handles and no thumb guide are FN actions
 
Another vote for the Husqvarna. My first hunting rifle was a 1950s .270 Husky then I went to a .308 and shed a couple pounds! Great rifles, both with superb accuracy. I recently picked up a 1950s era Husky 12 gauge double... again, beautifully made and finished firearm.

Intersurplus is great to deal with. Just read descriptions carefully and view the pictures on a full screen so you know what you're buying.
