Who hates a .270 Winchester?

worst failure I've seen on a caribou was using a 270 w/130 gr, bu tmore likley a product of the type of bullet used
econo soft points and 3 out of 5 had very little penetration, one just made it through the hide of the neck on the near side, nice mushroom though

No matter the cartridge choice, the appropriate bullet choice is by far the biggest factor in 'use enough gun'

Agreed

The Caribou in my avatar was killed with a 270, at a distance most here would not believe it capable of.
130 grain Nosler Partitions.
1 shot. Game over.

Cheers

All of the moose I've shot (10+) have been with a 270 Browning BAR, except my last (Steyr 308 Win). Most have been within tolerable distances, a few have been really, really far... a few factory loadings, mostly handloads, but most have been with heavy for calibre bullets.
Gave the BAR to a young hunter but still have a couple rifles chambered for the great 270 round.

Recoil.

Not that the 270 Win pushing a 130grain bullet is widely considered heavy recoiling, however for a small minority of shooters who just can't tolerate recoil, they will insist that a 243 Win or 223 Rem is a 'superior' deer rifle to the 270 Win, 30-06 SPRG, 308 Win, etc.

Well, if fear of recoil affects accuracy, they are right, the smaller calibres ARE superior for them. Bullet placement comes first and foremost above all else.

I hate the 270win... only because 280 exists =)
jokes aside never been a 270 fan, nothing wrong with it at all. Just never had a need for one having a 280 rem.
shoot what you enjoy and like.. also didnt read the whole thread,

As Jim just posted and I agree 130 ttsx or LRX is amazing!

There seems to be as much fondness for the 270 here as there is dislike. Hate is a terrible word. I’ve had a 270 of some sort most of my life, usually 2 of them. Recently purchased my first 280 Remington in the same model as my 270’s. Certainly have to think outside the book when it comes to reloading data for a 280 as most is pathetic! But I’ve got my two choices for this fall ready to go. 280 with 140 AccuBond at 2940 and the 270 with 140gr AccuBond at 2930, I’m doubtful there’s any noticeable difference in performance.

A 130 gr Barnes TTSX will way out penetrate YOUR Speer 150 Gran Slams but will not kill any better ! 🤷‍♂️🙂
Maybe, but at three times the cost, I will never use Barnes bullets they are way over priced and way over hyped, a result of excellence in marketing. I find heavy for calibre Speer or Interlocks to be very deadly and I have never had one fail to completely penetrate, including grizzly and moose.

Curious. Have you used Barnes bullets?

I’ve never used Barnes or any monolithic bullet. I think they work fine from what I hear. However, I’ve also heard some say that interlocks suck and I think Ive shot every big game animal with interlocks and can only recall needing more than one shot one one occasion, and when I opened that deer up, the first shot was fatal, the Deere just didn’t know it. Strangest thing I ever saw. Now, to be fair, I have not shot as man animals as others snd have not experimented with different bullets so my experience is not as extensive as most others. Just sharing my experience.

Oh little man, I see you’re the one with the hurt feelers. It’s ok,

I’m no protector of anyone (don’t know Chuck}. You got caught trying to play big white hunter on the interweb and feel dumb after doing so. One elk killed gives your opinion about the amount of a bowl of soup. Really, not much of anything…

You can’t stop people from telling the truth.

And you were taking me to task for supposed trolling and attitude the other day lol. Davey are you doing okay lately? Not asking to be a jerk, sincerely wondering.

On topic, there was an interesting...incident...here this season and while I did not witness it, I did see video of it. A small bull moose was hit with a 338 WM at rather close range, not the best shot. Ran into some bushes, then turned, ran back out in front of the hunters and was shot again, and shot at again, and then hit in the ass and fell. Not sure if it succumbed or was given a finisher.

Now I won't say 338s aren't good. I know they are.

But dang, shoot your rifle well! Or learn to pass on shots, or...I don't know. These aren't guys who don't have many shots on game either, they hunt and travel quite a bit.

All this to say, under practical conditions, a 270 is a 7mm-08 is a 308 is a 30-06 is a 303 British is a 7mm magnum is a....well you get what I am saying. Unless you're really pushing it and doing the extraordinary.
