Does anyone here shoot a revolver?

Boy, it sure seems that there aren't many revolver threads on this site. I am very interested in purchasing a new Taurus Mod 66 or Ruger GP 100. I know I have to go and shoot them both before I decide which one to get, but I was wondering if anyone had personal experience with either of them and could recommend one or the other to start with. Or, if there is a viable alternative for roughly the same price (about $600 CAD + tax). It has to be a wheelgun, though, no autos! I really like the ability to shoot .38spl and .357 mag with the same gun.

Wheelguns rule.

Almost forgot, anyone with cool pics of their revolvers or add-ons, feel free to post.

There are plenty who shoot and appreciate wheelguns. My favorite I've ever owned was a S&W 686 (38sp/357). I've heard good things about both of the guns you mention. What I would look for is a good smooth double action, crisp single action, and decent adjustable sights. I would also consider aftermarket support and gunsmith support if you want to tune it up for a lighter smoother trigger. That was a major plus in buying a Smith gun. Lots of information on how to tune them up.
 
I shoot a S&W 686. I know that doesn't help you decide between the Taurus or the Ruger but I know that I do like my 686 and yes, it is nice to have the option to shoot 357mag or 38spl with the same gun. The only thing I don't like about the 686 is, being stainless, it is a real ##### to clean and it gets visibly dirty after that first shot! It does look nice however when it is all shined up after a good cleaning however.
 
it goes like this- smith, ruger, then taurus- since you took the smith out of the mix, then the ruger would be my first choice-my personal is a ruger redhawk, but that's built for strength , period- the trigger is a LOT better on the smith, ( smoother and lighter) but you're best to try both is you can- but as far as finish goes, i'd DEFINATELY go stainless
 
Thanks for the help. I do love the S&W line, and didn't realize that the 686 is almost the same price as the Ruger and Taurus. Any ideas where I could get a new 686 in Alberta for a good price (in .38spl/.357mag)?

And, oh yes, it will be stainless....
 
When talking about a .357 revolver, then S&W and GP100 will soon come to account. I have a 686 bought used five years ago and man this gun is sweet as candy. check out our site supporter to see who has them in stock, It may be a little more than the GP but well worth the buck.

Mine's a Webley, never had a Ruger or a Taurus so I won't tell you one is better than the other, but I have heard a few comments about the Taurus brand having poor warranty support and/or spare parts availability in Canada so you might want to research that issue a bit to see if it is a concern for you.
 
Yes, I do shoot and I like revolvers. The photo is my custom S&W 3rd Model Hand Ejector. Yes, again, this revolver is too evil for my Canadian cousins to own. Regards, Richard:)

I think there are lots of revolver shooters here. Less threads is likely because there are less problems, etc. to discuss. I for one have more revolvers than I do semi-autos... well I think I do. ;)

I wouldn't buy a Taurus because there is no factory support for them in Canada. Resell value will be much less than the others. I assume you want a double action revolver and not a single action? There are more manufactures to choose from if you are looking at single action.

Also, check out the equipment exchange here. Post a want ad if you are in a rush. I've bought two 686 here and had good deals. Consider a S&W 586. It's blue but should be cheaper than a 686.

If you want a 7 shot consider then 686 7 shot with a 5" barrel that was recently imported and should be available at your local dealers and a few of the supporting dealers here.

I only have one revolver which I obtained recently, and it has got me hooked. It is a Colt Police Positive, .38 S&W in excellent condition and it was dirt cheap from marstar. Of course there had to be a catch...the ammo is difficult to locate, and when I can find it, it is expensive. As well, it is a pretty useless caliber for anything other than punching holes in paper...but I love it all the same. I'm hoping to acquire a .357 wheel gun soon as well, but I do like the Model 10s as well.
 
I'd have to agree with the wisdom shared here, Smith - Ruger - Taurus. Smith revolvers are famous for a reason, I put 30,000 rounds through a Model 10 - 0 misfires, 0 issues, no reduction in accuracy, really nice trigger. I did shoot a 686 for a while, beautiful revolver and built like a tank. I also had a GP100, reliable and strong but not quite the same finesse as the Smiths and not quite as accurate

Why son! Thems fight'n words!

Ruger SBH .44 MAG 7.5" stainless with a Hogue grip. Its no longer a knuckle basher! lol!
 
i haven't yet seen speedloaders for the 7 round units- although they SHOULD BE out there- reason i shoot a revolver is i got sick and tired of policing my brass- and i'm left handed as well- you just learn how to handle it differently-i went 44/45 because i could see very little diff between the 38 spcl and 9mm,and the big frames fit my big old mitts better
 
Revolvers are my preference but I saw a Performance Center S&W 945 and while they are 'pricey', I wouldn't mind getting something state of the art in 45 ACP & a 9mm. In the meantime I plink with a 4" Colt Diamondback in 22lr, 6" 357 Colt Python, 4" S&W model 29 (my favorite), 44 Ruger Flattop and a 45 Ruger Vaquero. If I really want to knock the cobwebs loose, 500 S&W.
 
In the past I owned a Ruger GP100, while it was built like a tank, the trigger was terribly heavy in single action and not so smooth in double action. I would say a trigger job is in order for these guns, if you have a gunsmith do it expect to add that to your final cost of the gun.

I also own a S&W model 29 .44, out of the box the trigger is quite nice in both single and double action, fit and finish is nice too. (its 30 years old and only test fired 3 rounds when I got it.) If the 686 triggers are like these, which I am sure they are, you'd be happy with one for sure.
