Im wanting to build a custom mountian rifle
so far its a mcmillan hunters edge 22 oz
lilja barrel countur #1 22" finished = 40 oz hate to do it BUT maybe will flute it too
scope leupold VX III 4.5-14X40 B&C(anyone know the weight)
probably just go with a timmeny trigger (same deal anyone know the weight)
rings and bases will be talley not sure if I want the fixed or screw locked
a butler creek alaskan sling
I would like to find a CRF in a titanium action
with a bolt face that will accept a WSM cartridge
it must also have a floor plate or a DM (floor plate is probably lighter)
will accept some kind of titanium firing pin and shroud
is there such a thing
Im also going to skeletonize the bolt handle and the trigger and the trigger gaurd

I want a good shooting rifle but weight will be a serious issue any opinions are welcome
and the facts are more welcome

would make for an awfully stiff shot with the WSMs.

Curiosity: when I hear "mountain rifle" I think ".260 or .280"

Thought about those ctgs?

I'd go with a BDL configuration over a DM and just opt for a S/S Rem 700 action that has been trued and squared. Get the bolt fluted and the bolt handle done. There are a couple top notch gun parts manufactures who are turning out aftermarket trigger guards for the ADL and BDL. Leave the barrel alone...I hate fluted light barrels...makes no sense to me and will likely not help accuracy at all. Open the mounting holes up to 8 from 6 on the action for added strength and have the Talleys lapped. Bolt shrouds and firing pins are available from Gre-Tan and Pierce. I had mine Ceracoated for extra protection against rust and corossion

Seems counterproductive to go to all that cost for a lightweight rifle and top it with a heavy scope.

I'd go with a VXII in 2x7 or a VXIII in 2.5x8.

An action built for the 7x57 case family screams MOUNTAIN RIFLE to me. $6500 for it tells me that I'd rethink a production TI action, even if it was only a push feed.:p:D

featherweight

Sounds like a good start. I used a Rem Sa for my 300 wsm. Ordered a new bolt from pacific tool and gauge, comes fluted and with the appropriate bolt face. Titanium firing pin and aluminum bolt shroud. Wyatt outddoors internal bottom metal (center-line feed for a BDL). Lone wolf composites stock, 10.5 oz. Taley ring and bases and a leupold M8 4x (8 oz). Barrel 30 cal, 1-10, 20" long turned absolutley as thin as we dared and then tear drop flutes through the chamber area. Action lightened as much as possible. Total weight 5.5 lbs.

I looked at the titaniums and what you got for the money didn't(in my eyes)make it worth the extra. Even with all the work it was still cheaper to buy the steel action and the weight difference was just a few ounces. The bolt from Dave Kiff was a stroke of genius, because later on if I want to change calibers i have a second bolt in 308 for whatever I want.

Just my thoughts.

I've had several "mountain rifles" and if I was going to do it again I would buy a Kimber Montana 7mm-08, call it good and put the large amount of dollars left over as compared to an all-out custom toward a hunt. I'd run 120 TSX's at 3000+ fps and be ready for anything that lives on the hills.

Second choice would be to buy a M700 LSS in your favourite caliber, sell the laminate stock and drop it in a McMillan EDGE.

For a scope, that's a no-brainer. It would be a Leupold 6X36 or 6X42 matte with the new L.R. reticle in Talley lightweights.

At one time, David Henry would do a lightweight make over on a Remington action, not sure if he's still doing that. On the Stainless CRF line, suppose one could work over a Win 70 action, but not sure how this would end up.
Cut to chase and go Kimber, they are nice!
