If you live in Calgary, go to the Southland Canadian Tire and you'll find they have a special on the base model, black synthetic stock, Remington 597 rifles. They are on for $139.99 today until Sunday. They are completely sold out, but will accept rain cheques, and the next batch of rifles should be here sometime in May (they wouldn't say what day exactly).

I'll be getting one for myself at that price, thought I would share with everyone.
 
I tried to buy one over the phone today because the weather was so bad, but they said I needed to go in person to get the rain cheque.
If I knew you a bit better I would offer to get it for you... do you know anyone in the city here that could do it for you?
 
yeah they come in a flat black synththetic stock, and the one I saw there has a bipod mount in the forestock, so that's nice too.
You guys should check for them in your local Crappy Tires too, maybe they have a special as well.

Nope, I don't know of any Canadian Tires in Manitoba that carry .22's or larger. I don't really look anymore though. If anyone knows of where I could pick one up in Manitoba I'm really interested. My girlfriend wants a .22 but wants the stock in black or real wood (her only requests). I wanted her to get a 597 but I thought they only came in that carbon crap.
 
i dont think i've seen any rifles at any of the cantires here in saskatoon either. maybe the ones in the smallers towns but not here in saskatoon.
 
Only one Canadian Tire in Calgary sells the rifles, but they actually have a pretty good selection believe it or not!
That post works for sling swivels OR Harris bipods (as you can see from these pics).

I went down there today to see about getting the rain cheque and it turns out whoever it was I talked was talking out of his ass! They still have some in stock, but not for long I would think. Sorry guys, I just can't plunk down the dough and buy them for all of you, wish you were here to take advantage of this too.
What an incredible buy for $140! Picked up 50 rounds of 3 different ammos to try in the rifle (Winchester PPs, Federal hollow points and CCI stingers). Gotta find a scope for it and see how it shoots gophers as soon as this winter blast goes away.
 
The black one is way ###ier than the carbon. You would think Remington would sell more if they just went to black.
 
I think Red Deer does have the same deal, because the manager from the Calgary gun counter said he's going to be up there today I think. Give them a call.
The Wholesale in Calgary is sold out of 597s.
I agree, that nasty grey/blue stock just looks so awful. The black is much, much better. Still not as nice of a stock as a Ruger, but for $140 less I'll deal with it.

The CT in Meadowvale here in Mississauga had a limited selection of rimfire ammo when I visited last month; I asked when they were re-stocking and learned they wern't planning to anymore, ever again. :(
