Cleaning AR 15

CLP (Breakfree) is the recommended oil/cleaner for AR15's. I've used it for years and can recommend it. That said, basically, any good bore cleaner (Hoppe's #9 comes to mind) can be used. A good gun oil afterwards to lubricate all metal surfaces is required. I've used WD40 successfully in cleaning the carbon out as well. It's not the best lubricant, so use a good gun oil after you've cleaned and dried the various gun parts. CLP (stands for Cleans Lubricates & Protects) can be used to both clean and lubricate and is used extensively by the various militaries that use the C7/M16 class of weapons. It's available under the name Breakfree from any good gun store.
 
WD40 is a displacement liquid, not really a lubricant, IIRC it will actually make things rust.

I just use a brass brush to remove carbon on bolt components, and gun oil as a lubricant. I will be trying out some graphite based lubricant to try and run my gun a little dryer, I tend to over lubricate.
 
Don't really gotta clean it, Ive put 300rd though One that was brand new out of the box w/o even taking a rag to it. Sure she smoked like crazy. But helped the the grease out of it. I turn in that rifle with 4000rds though it.

I Use Brake Free CLP.

I hope you're kidding. Cleaning and maintaining your firearm is crucial for flawless operation and hassle free shooting. Even more important for those who trust their lives to their firearms.

Nope, Not kidding....We turned in our C7A1, Grabbed our C7A2 out of the boxes and had to be on the range in 20mins. So none of us had time to clean them.

Different story. I'm sure you would have cleaned them had you had time...right? Then again, you didn't pay for them.

I was going to post the same thing, but I didn't want to be a smart ass :D
I rarely clean them, other than a wipe down and re-lube, but when I do clean the gun it is pretty thural. That's why I want to try a dry lubricant, less of a mess to clean up.
 
I haven't cleaned my AR in ~2000 rounds. I just lube it w/ CLP when I'm done and throw it back in the safe.

Cleaning is over rated, and boring. That, and nobody shoots at me as part of my employment.
 
On issued rifles, CLP. On my personal AR, I used Hopps #9 for cleaning and Mobil 1 synthetic 5W 30 for lube. The AR loves to run wet and Mobil 1 stays "wetter" longer.

Oh yeah, I would have cleaned it if I had the time. It served me well, Put about 4000rds though it w/o a single problem. I had regular maintenance done on it. I got the gas tube changed on it and the gas rings before I left.
 
Run a few patches (or a Boresnake) through it, wipe down the bolt, lubricate with the oil/grease of your liking and carry on, no real method to it at all.
