did a bit of research on this caliber and decided to buy a remington 770 in 7mm-08 and so i went to the gun store and put $100 down so the store owner could put it on lay a way. and i asked him what all could i use this on and he told me anything from groundhogs and coyotes to whitetail deer and moose.
i was just wondering how accurate of a statement that is?

either way im gunna get the rifle because i look the looks of it. and the store owner said it was his favourite caliber and he's pretty trustworthy.
 
Well, you COULD use a 7mm-08 for everything from woodchucks to moose. Not really a varmint calibre, good medium game one though.
The Rem. 770 would be a long way from my first choice in a rifle though.
 
It'll work well on most things. Its great on medium game... as far as varmints, ammo's a tad pricey to do a ton of varmint shooting.
As far as the 770, seems like the same idea of the 710 (now discontinued). back in the day, i was looking at the 710, borrowed my cousins (he loves it) but it felt wrong, horrible action, just felt cheap. Went out, dropped a bit of extra coin, 700SPS with detachable mag, and a Leupold scope and there's no regrets.

My friend tried to sell me his ".270" and I was foolish enough to drive over to his house to look at it. It was a rem 770. Please dont be foolish and waste your money on this gun. The bolt is rough fitting, the trigger guard is PLASTIC so it you drop it and it breaks you cant put another one on. The stock is crappy and the magazine is pretty ####ty. He is on his third one, as the spring isnt strong enough and broke twice. The spring was barely strong enough to feed the cartridges when It was new. I tried cycling a few rounds with his newest mag and I had a lot of jams as it wasn't powerful enough to press them up firmly to cycle.
I really think that for the money you could do A LOT BETTER.
Get yourself a savage or stevens, they are just as cheap, and a hell of alot more accurate and reliable. There are actually aftermarket parts available for them and if you break the trigger guard, you dont have to replace the WHOLE STOCK. Or pick up a used rifle for the same money and get a better gun. I would nicely go back to the store and ask to get your money back, but if you truly want the gun, dont say you weren't warned. They are generally considered by the gun totin' crowd as the BOTTOM OF THE BARREL in quality and I would feel pretty bummed if you wasted your money. And good luck trying to sell it, if you buy it and end up realizing that it wasn't worth the money.
 
No problem with the 7-08 for Deer and even the odd elk. The Rem 770 would not be my first choice as an entry level gun. It is the re-incarnation of the Rem 710. Do a search on that firearm see what comes up.

I agree 7/08 is a great caliber specially if you hand load,personally i would get a Rem 700 much better value and also lots of aftermarket options ie triggers,stocks.. I put a Ross thumbhole stock on mine and love shooting it!!
 
Yep, I agree with the other guys that the 7/08 is a fine cartridge, but I would look at a different rifle. The Remington 700 SPS would be a far better rifle to buy than the 770.
 
7mm-08=good

Remington 770=bad

I'd look at other rifle options like the Stevens 200, Savage, Weatherby Vanguard.

Actually I'd suggest going to a store that has a lot of different rifles and see how they feel in your hands. Hold them, bring them to your shoulder and see what one feels best. Then find an appropriate calibre that the rifle comes in.
 
I have no personal experience with either this choice of calibre or rifle... but that won't stop me from chiming in.
I've researched the 7mm-08 to death... it is the calibre!! Don't let anyone talk you out of it.
As for the 770... if the guys here say stay away from it, stay away from it. Yes, there are those out there that have the 710's or the 770's and love them. But they are the exception.
If it is a bargain rifle you're in the market for, get the Stevens 200. It certainly has the following of many hunters/shooters.
If you want to invest in something a little nicer, do yourselve a huge favour, drive down to Lake Huron Rod & Gun and put your deposit on the Tikka T3 Lite. At $595 this is a true bargain and will get you so much more gun for the money.
There's my $.02!

Get the 7mm-08, but tell him you want a 700 SPS instead, you won't regret it. The scope is garbage anyway.
 
I purchased a Tikka 3 Laminate 7mm-08 last fall and I must say I am very impressed with the accuracy with different load weights from 140 grain to 175 gr. I am hoping to get a moose with it this fall. Highly recommended caliber.

A fantastic cartridge.... but if you want it in a Remy starter rifle then go for the SPS.... add a Bushnell Elite 3200 or Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm and you're in business..... ;)
 
I have one in a Tikka T3, I like it, All I have killed so far is one ground hog, planning to pop a blackie with it in a week or two.

I am currently using an Handloaded Hornady 139 gr BTSP, I am going to be trying a 139 gr SST, and a 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. The Sierra 120s are supposed to be deadly on deer at ranges up to 400yds.
 
definitely ask if you can have your deposit shifted to a 700 SPS instead. the SPS is a full fledged Remington 700, with just a more utilitarian finish.
the 770 is a bottom-end gun that has had every single one of its components cheapified from plastic parts to press-fit barrels. it is absolutely the worst investment in a gun i can imagine.

even if someone intended to shoot only 4-5 shots a year and wanted a dirt cheap gun i would push them to buy something else like a Stevens 200 or Remington SPS. hell, i would rather leave my $100 deposit and walk than buy a 770.
