Looking to get a Jungle Carbine as a gift for someone who has shown interest in them... but I know squat about milsurp.

What should I look for?

What should I expect to pay?

Thanks guys!

From another site...

No. 5 “Jungle Carbine” Overall length 39-1/2 inches; 20-1/2 inch barrel with flash hider. Rubber buttplate; short fore-end.

An honest No. 5 rifle has lightening flutes cut and extensive milling done to the receiver to lighten it. (Take the handguard off and look for the barrel flutes.)

The No. 5 will be electro-engraved “No5MKI” on the left side of the receiver and will not have “No. 4” stamped or engraved anywhere on it.

The bolt knob will also be drilled out.

In addition, it will bear the proper manufacturer’s code: “(ROF)F” for Fazakerley or “M47C” for BSA-Shirley.

Finally, the barrel band will be only 8 inches in front of the receiver ring--rather than 10-3/4 inches as on a No. 4 rifle.

Hopefully whoever it is has the ability to absorb some nasty recoil Demented...they kick pretty good. It should be a factor considered.

Usually the rubber butt pad is dried out...making it feel worse....

I've had a few Jungle Carbines, and even when the rubber pad is like new it's no different...it's just a piece of Indian Rubber...:D

Imagine Brit troops firing one of these and then trying a Yank's Garand...not quite in the same league...wandering zero indeed...;)

You have to remember that the butt pad was there to protect the rifle from the ground, NOT to protect the operator from recoil!

Yes, the No.5 is the only rifle, that has managed to knock my hat off so far!

(Butt is a little short for me, and the raised rear sight hit the brim of my ball cap).

They DO kick like mules.... But only small mules! You get used to them!

I've heard they kick pretty hard, but you can get replacement buttpads for them if your's is all dried out. I think Numrich sells them.

You would think they would have made a wide pad rather than that narrow little hard rubber thingy.

Just be careful when looking at one to buy. I have seen the "Santa Fe" mock up No 5s and a few home made jobbies, including one at the last Orangeville gunshow. The one at Orangeville looked really good until you started looking at the details. The price, however, was well over $400, which would be more in line with a minty, all original, all matching No 5, not a mucked up No 4. If you have any friends with Milsurps, try to get an original in your hands so you know what to look for - serial number placement, lightened barrel knoxform, correct 800 yard rear sight, proper butt plate, etc. Good luck.

Personally I think the No.5 recoil issue is overstated. Versus the steel buttstock of my No.4, I find the No.5 quite comfortable to shoot. Recoil isn't that bad on any .303.

YMMV.

I once had a big fat lip to attest to that. But no modest LE collection is complete without at least a #1, #4 & #5.

.

I beg to differ. Bubba is an unforgivable dirty sin to many.

saw a pick of were a guy took a type one mark three and put that butt on it. said it helped a lot with the kick

I dunno....I can fire my No 4's lots comfortably, but 5 rounds from a JC and it's not fun anymore...

Don't want to sound like a wimp...I bought a slip over buttpad for my JC, made it a lot more pleasant to use.

As I can remember buttstock on JC is jhollow - one can fill it with plumber's putty mixed with led shot. That will lighten up felt recoil. Plus you can experiment with different ways to grip JC, do not press it hard agains your shoulder and have a bit of forward pressure on your both hands - that makes it almost like 22.
