Just like everyone opinion on this. Last fall(Nov.) my brother and I travelled 4.5 hours north to hunt a specific area we had scoped out the previous year. We left early in the morning and arrived there just after daylight. Just about where we want to stop there's a truck blocking the road. Its parked in a narrow spot where there's no room to get around it. Normally if I come upon a truck pulled off to the side I know someones hunting there and I will just turn around. In this case the guy was obviously trying to keep everyone else out. I get out, move a stump and four wheel around his truck. Now I'm pissed and just want to see who this ass hole is. We went in and had a few words, the guy can't beleive we came in and messed up his private spot. I somehow managed to keep from getting out and pounding this looser but it made for a very unpleasant morning. Who's in the wrong?

Depends on what was past it I guess. If it was only a single cutblock or not enough room for more than the first guy then you were in the wrong. How was he supposed to know you were going to drive 4.5hours to get there second?

However, if there was a lot of room for more than one guy, then he was.

Get there earlier next time.

As it turns out the road only went a short distance. We hadn't explored this particular road earlier. If I would have known that I wouldn't have continued. I have no problem with first come first served i just don't like people blocking roads. If you guys think I'm in the wrong I'm O.K. with that. I still think you're asking for trouble when you purposely block a public road.

Sounds like yet another attempt to claim public land for private use. It may not be quite the same as nailing up a permanent tree-stand to "claim" the spot for eternity,or posting crown land, but it is the same idea. I like to stay away from other hunters, but I hate being told to stay away. Getting beat to a spot is part of hunting public land. So is sharing it with others who don't honor the "first come, first served idea". So is having a plan B, C, D and E. There are no easy answers, short of buying your own land. I think you're both going to have to suck it up.

When I see a vehicle parked, I will normally move on too. But it really boils my blood to see someone purposely block a road so they can have it to themselves. Why does it boil my blood? I had gotten to a spot pretty early and driven in. The road forked and there was a cut block at each end. I went up near one and started walking, then bushwacked to the other one. I got back to my truck and started to drive out but I couldn't!! That's because someone was blocking the road to prevent others from getting in. Good thing there wasn't an emergency or something, but I sure felt like either ramming the truck out of the way or using the tires as targets!

If you are going to block a road, make damn sure that no one is in there ahead of you!

Oh, and I don't think there is a right or wrong with your actions, but you could have perhaps dealt with it better.

Well I believe that the right thing to do is turn around. The guy may have been blocking the road but he was there first.

We had a situation happen one time where me and a buddy drove in to a spot and parked. I was driving, it was my truck. I parked in front of what any normal guy would only consider a quad trail. I never gave it a thought, cuz I would not think of trying to drive in on that trail and assumed nobody else would either. But some guys came along in a 4x4 and apparently they wanted very badly to get by my truck, to drive in on this trail. When we came walking out a few hours later me met these 2 guys and one of them was really torqued up about me, "blocking the road!" He was foaming at the mouth I tell ya'...
* FYI: My truck would not have stopped quads from using the trail.

No matter where I might want to hunt on a particular day, if I arrive at a spot and there are people already there, I just move on. I always have other spots in mind to hunt and I have stumbled into some great situations due to being pushed out of a hunting area.

I shot this buck last November after I had to switch hunting areas...

On a short, dead end road, the reason guys like that (and guys like me) block the road is so that they WALK IN to a spot without scaring everything away and NOT have some ####### drive their truck or quad or whatever into the block 5 minutes before legal shooting light and mess everything up.

I used to park off to the side, but more often then not some #### would drive past my parked truck, knowing full well that it was a dead end road, and scare the deer into timber or keep them from coming out before dark. I have had others beat me to an area that I had planned on hunting for months; my problem for not waking up earlier.

Having an attitude with the guy because he was there first? I think you need to think about how you would feel if a couple guys just DROVE their truck into the spot you had WALKED into and f***ed up your hunt.

Next time turn around and go somewhere else, or if you really need to go into the spot, park your truck and walk, quietly.

Blocking roads of any sort is just plain dangerous, idiotic and makes absolutely no sense, unless your at that part of the road where regular vehicle traffic must stop, such as washed out bridge, quad only, gate or such. There is nothing wrong with parking on the side of the road, to allow others that must have access that right. A hunter seeing a vehicle parked on the side of a short road, must realize that he will not be alone, and should use common courtesy and turn around, go elsewhere. People who park in the middle of the roads, and leave their vehicles unattended are asking for the consequences. Remember, not only hunters have the right to that road, spur, land that you may have just blocked. Forestry, mining, silviculture, as well as many other people may need access. Remember tow trucks are just a cell call away, and I wont hesitate to call one for you.

What he said ..

the right thing to do is to park your truck off to the side so that if someone needs to get by then they can..
if I see a truck parked on the side of a small road where someone has obviously walked down to hunt, I will turn around and go somewhere else, because thats the last place I want to hunt if someone else is there. and its the courteous, ethical thing to do

but if someone parks their vehicle in the middle of the road which is not the courteous, ethical thing to do, then that pisses me off and I will make a point of making as much noise as possible and hopefully getting around that vehicle and ruining that persons hunt.. there is no reason to block a road on crown land

 So if someone else is an a**hole, you feel compelled to be one too?

road

No one has the right to block the road AT ALL!!! How did he know no one was ahead etc. blocking the (assuming it is a public)road is so amazingly self centered i have never been able to fathom it. if pressure is so great that someone might come up behind you on "your" road, hunt somewhere else with less pressure. that being said, i (unless i know there are lots of roads past the vehicle) don't drive by them if they are near the end of a spur/road. just as an aside, a great thing to have in your truck is one of those tire valve removal tools. :D
cueball

Blocking a public road is wrong, just pull off to the side is the right thing to do, like others said most people will carry on a fair way past the parked truck before hunting themselves. If a vehicle driving by might ruin your hunt you are too close to the road anyway.

yes, I do use that as a general rule of thumb

but seriously if I decide I am going to be an ignorant a**hole, then I should expect the same treatment in return.

where I am from, you don't block roads. there is no reason for it and it isn't going to make you any friends

Blocking a road is a poor choice. Another poor choice is to ruin your day by getting bent out of shape about someone else doing it, and wasting your time getitng into an altercation.

Are you out there to get into a pissing match , or are you out there to hunt?

I am by no means sticking up for the road blocker. I just don't understand how you could be un-interested if he parked on the side of the road, but if he blocks the road you suddenly lose interest in hunting and have to play hero?

Cool. Got a superman cape behind the seat?:D;)
