Can't buy powder/primers/ammo here rant!

I was in WalMart here in SJ this morning. While waiting for my wife to do shopping, I staggered over to the "ammo" section to take stock.

This is what they had on hand +/- a few boxes, but they only had four centerfire calibers in stock as follows ........ :mad:

WW 7Mag 175gr (approx 5 boxes)
WW 303Brit 180gr (appox 12-14 boxes)
WW 300WinMag 180gr (1 box)
WW 22/250 (approx 7 boxes)

No 30/06, 270, 308, 243, .223, WSMs, or even the KING OF THE 375s (375 Ruger). :eek:

SJ is a city of over 100,000 with the surrounding sm communities and this is what we get from WalMart. Canadian Tire isn't much better. There is a sporting store here with a little better selection, but it's very expensive an the owner isn't very popular. No one here carries powder or primers at all.

Be pro-active. Sounds like a potential business opportunity to me. If not get a bunch of friends and put together a large order of what you need from one on the dealers here and by splitting shipping the price isn't too bad.

What the hell put save up for a life time supply of all your needs and make a road trip to a good supplier. Great reason for a road trip with some friends. Shopping sprees aren't only for the ladies:D
 
We already do that with group buys from Higginsons. It works well enough, but it hard to imagine that one can't buy 30/06 in WalMart.

I get pretty pissed off at the local Can tire/Walmart selections here in yellowknife. We have 3 places to buy ammo here. The third is a hunting/fishing store with outrageous mark ups. I was at walmart and a box of .300 win mag Winchester grey box 180 gr power points were $22 and change. The Canadian Tire has roughly the same prices +/- a buck or two. Now when you go to the third store. The same box costs 40-44 dollars. AND ITS ACROSS THE STREET. The problem is that the selection is getting less and less at Can tire/Wallyworld, and just try to find someone "who has the keys" or is even old enough to sell you the ammo. Its so frustrating to wait 20 minutes or more for someone " find the guy who has the keys to the cabinet"
Is it any wonder I am starting to reload in this god forsaken place?
You'd think that one of these stores would get off their ass and try to corner the market on ammo sales. Get a massive supply in, sell at good prices, and put the other 2 out of business (as far as ammo goes)
NOW MY ACTUAL QUESTION!!
What is involved in becoming an ammo dealer/seller. The cost of people ordering ammo online and shipping here is WAY too cost prohibitive. We are 1500 KM north of edmonton. UPS and CANPAR, and FED EX use "sister companies" to ship stuff here and the shipping costs WAY more than the actual ammo costs. If I were to want to become an ammo dealer, (literally just to provide the massive amount of hunters and range shooters with a cost effective way to shoot) what would I have to do to become a dealer?
I dont think I would even mark up any ammo beyond what it cost to get it here. So really ZERO profit. I just want to give people a way to not get SOAKED by super high prices and shi tty selections. Walmart has only Winchester ammo, and only one choice in each caliber. Canadian Tire has a little better selection but beyond winchester ammo the prices are super high also. AND WHO WANTS TO PAY DOUBLE for the same ammo across the street?
 
Its the same here...A few boxes of ammo in a few calibers is it.. The local Canadian Tire isn't much better...Its pretty much why I started to reload...
 
I think with Yellowknife's population of 20,000 that I could maintain a good selection of ammo and sell lots. I just dont have the slightest clue as to what is required to become a dealer. I guess a sales licence is required (business licence) , Tax collection account. Contacts with dealers. But what about storage of large quantities of ammo for sale? Liability insurance, etc. These are the things I need to know about. I am serious about this, as I believe someone has to get off their keister and provide the masses with a good selection at excellent prices. I would appreciate any help with finding out what it would take. A list of requirements would be appreciated. Thanks
 
The City of Nelson is maybe 9000 but once you include the area and the fact that there are three cities all within 45 minutes of each other( Castlegar, Trail ) you would think that somebody would have a decent selection of stuff...

Plus, we don't have to get a permit to pass gas here, we jut let her fly ;) :wave:

That whole permit crap to take your guns out just blows my mind. I would leave for that reason alone.

I'd buy from you...provided you dropped stuff off at our hangar for delivery. I'd like to see powder and primers myself - factory ammo is for suckers! Every time I go into the unnamed store that you allude to I want to strangle myself. But the sleection is better than the Inuvik Northmart!
 
Not that many years ago Nelson supported 3 sporting goods stores (mostly hunting and fishing) and two large stores that also sold fire arms and ammo.
What a horrible slope we're sliding down.:mad:
 
I'm from Nova Scotia originally so you can imagine my surprise when I moved to Red Deer, walked into the local Crappy tire and HOLY S**T!!!!! They have guns!!!! Probably between 750 - 1000 boxes of ammo in all calibres, hell they have Weatherby ammo and firearms in stock. Gotta love it when the store owner is a gun nut and huge supporter of Ducks Unlimited and othe such groups. Just in handgun ammo (as of my last trip in) 38, 357, 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP, 460, 454Casull, 357SIG, half dozen boxes of each. I haven't seen a CT store with a gun counter in years so I was very pleasently surprised. We also have 2 outdoor stores in town here, one of which consistently beats Calgary and Edmonton prices on firearms by at least $100 bucks, much more in some cases.

HOLY CRAP!!! I was in that very same CRAPPY TIRE in Red Deer about a year ago, and I am still talking about it. It took me a half hour just to find some bullets for my 30-06 because there was just SO MANY KINDS to choose from.
My mouth was agape when I saw their selection. I had a few talks with my wife about moving to Red Deer just for that very reason . (cleverly disguised in talk about a possible Nursing shortage at the Hospital there). It pretty much made me hate EVERY OTHER CANADIAN TIRE store since, because they all now look like liberals own the stores. Other than Red Deer's store, it should be called LIBERAL TIRE

Aren't CT stores privately owned? I would imagine talking to the owner/manager to bring in some calibers that you want.

I was in CT last year when a fellow asked the clerk for some 35Whelen ammo and got nothing but a blank/puzzled stare in return. :(

I was going to butt into the conversation and offer to buy the poor fellow's rifle (at a very low price), but thought better and stayed out of it.

Strange, here in Terrace we have two gunstores. Sure one is bigger then the other, but we also have Canadian tire and Wal Mart who sell some ammo. Prices are higher the mailorder, but not obscenly so.
 
We are lucky here in Whitehorse,the Sportslodge did a complete turn around a year or so ago.There prices were just out to lunch.I get they realized the sales they were missing,now they will match Wholesale sports or beat them .Order a rifle you they will match or beat at Wholesale sports price and no freight.There powder is cheaper,there bullets are within a buck a buck as a rule.

I remember being astonished in Whitehorse in 1998 after walking into CT and finding 375H&H and 458W ammo.
