Catnthehatt's F.A.I.R. has got me thinking about a double rifle again. I was excited when Baikal (Now Remington) came out with an affordable double...until I saw it in real life.
So I started looking. I thought I'd post some double rifles that appear to be decent quality and yet are still affordable enough that mere mortals can perhaps hope that one day their safe will harbour one of these gems - hey, a line of credit and monthly payments, maybe I can swing one of these! Of course the Minister of Finance would have to approve.
I'd prefer the rifle be in 9.3x74R. I think it is a fine caliber for moose, deer and elk. Of course a .375 H&H is good too, but the prices go up really quickly when compared to the 9.3!
Here are a few, feel free to add some more:
This is a Verney-Carron. This particular 9.3x74R is advertised for US$2799 (list price is 2575 Euros, or about $3750, so this offer is pretty good). They also offer a plain model for 1997 Euros, which is just under $2500 list, but it is only available in 8x57 JRS.
Another interesting o/u from the same manufacturer is the Sagittaire Traqueur One. It has 19.7" barrels, weighs 6.6lbs and is 37" overall length. The list price is 2171 Euros, or about $3000. It is available in 8x57 JRS or 9.3x74R.
Browning Express rifles are also available in other parts of the world. Here is a CCS 525. I found them for sale for 3279 Euros, which is about $4850. It is available in .30R Blaser, 8x57 JSR and 9.3x74R.
The Fabarm Asper is available here, TSE sells them for $3199 (according to their web site).
The Chapuis Orion C5 can be had for 3330 Euros, about $4930.
As far as SxS rifles go, the Blaser S-2 seems to be the only one that fits into this category. They can be had for $4469.
And of course the beautiful Beretta 689 Silver Sable II. Available in .30-06, 8x57 JRS and 9.3x74R, with 22" or 24" barrels, weighing in at around 7.7lbs. I found them for around US$5100, which is, in my view getting up there to the limit, price wise.
More to come, but I have some work to do. Gotta earn the dough!
But please add your own pics, ideas and comments until then. Thanks!
