Catnthehatt's F.A.I.R. has got me thinking about a double rifle again. I was excited when Baikal (Now Remington) came out with an affordable double...until I saw it in real life.

So I started looking. I thought I'd post some double rifles that appear to be decent quality and yet are still affordable enough that mere mortals can perhaps hope that one day their safe will harbour one of these gems - hey, a line of credit and monthly payments, maybe I can swing one of these! Of course the Minister of Finance would have to approve.;) I'd prefer the rifle be in 9.3x74R. I think it is a fine caliber for moose, deer and elk. Of course a .375 H&H is good too, but the prices go up really quickly when compared to the 9.3!

Here are a few, feel free to add some more:

This is a Verney-Carron. This particular 9.3x74R is advertised for US$2799 (list price is 2575 Euros, or about $3750, so this offer is pretty good). They also offer a plain model for 1997 Euros, which is just under $2500 list, but it is only available in 8x57 JRS.

Another interesting o/u from the same manufacturer is the Sagittaire Traqueur One. It has 19.7" barrels, weighs 6.6lbs and is 37" overall length. The list price is 2171 Euros, or about $3000. It is available in 8x57 JRS or 9.3x74R.

Browning Express rifles are also available in other parts of the world. Here is a CCS 525. I found them for sale for 3279 Euros, which is about $4850. It is available in .30R Blaser, 8x57 JSR and 9.3x74R.

The Fabarm Asper is available here, TSE sells them for $3199 (according to their web site).

The Chapuis Orion C5 can be had for 3330 Euros, about $4930.

As far as SxS rifles go, the Blaser S-2 seems to be the only one that fits into this category. They can be had for $4469.

And of course the beautiful Beretta 689 Silver Sable II. Available in .30-06, 8x57 JRS and 9.3x74R, with 22" or 24" barrels, weighing in at around 7.7lbs. I found them for around US$5100, which is, in my view getting up there to the limit, price wise.

More to come, but I have some work to do. Gotta earn the dough!:)

But please add your own pics, ideas and comments until then. Thanks!

The doubles are gorgeous, and no doubt well beyond my price range. You pay for quality, but even then the reasonable have their limits. If your life doesn't really depend on a rifle on a day to day basis, most folks simply can't warrant one. But this thread is about dreaming:

Prices can, and do go sky high! To get into a .375 H&H or .470 NE you are looking at around $8500, minimum.

Here is how I try to justify it: I don't smoke, but I think a box costs around $9. So if I smoked a pack a day, that would be $3285 per year. I figure instead of starting to smoke, I'll buy one of these rifles with money saved in a mere 1 to 1 1/2 years! I've got it all worked out LOL.
*grumble, grumble*

Like I said...dreaming. Does anyone on CGN actually own a double rifle (other than Cat)?

If I were going to buy a double rifle I would look at the Searcy.
http://www.searcyent.com/classic.html

They are made in the USA and have fantastic service from I have read. If anything goes wrong with your rifle you ship it to them and they fix it, no questions asked.

I say if you want one buy it.

Btw I do not like the over-under, in a rifle. The action is not as strong as a good sidelock or boxlock side-by-side.

In my humble opinion there's no point in buying a double unless it's British made (Rigby a US British transplant being the only exception). Failing that Kreigoff or Heym would be acceptable distant second choices.

 someone call help having heart attack. The cost of some of the guns pretty much the same price of a NEW HOUSE in parts of BC. Other places...well maybe a place to put your cardboard box as you'd have no home to live in after getting one of those beauties.

I very nearly bought a side by side Heym double a few years ago in 7x65R. The store allowed me to test fire it. It wouldn't hold a group from both barrels at 50 yds and needed to be regulated. I spoke to Holland and Holland as I was living in the UK at the time and they told me that regulating a double is like a black science and wouldn't be worth the investment on a $15k Heym.

Check this .577 double out. At 102,000 British Pounds ($CAN 200,000) you'd be going to see your cardio specialist pronto.

I just bought a double last week....a 375H&H Merkel. Simply gorgeous. But I am also finding out that scoping a gem like this is another grand. Apparently they need special consideration for alignment to the bore.

Yes, they are more expensive, but as another has said before, you could buy a several low priced Winnies, remys, and CZ's or one sweet double as your favorite. It just depends what you want in the cabinet. I have double fever. Call the doctor!

By the way, the over-unders tend to be priced a lot lower than the SXS.

Also, follow the online sites. Ellwood Epps has a Merkel 12ga/30-06 drilling in model 96 for 4 grand. (I think double 12 ga, not a real double rifle tho) but a baragin at that price- check the retail on a new one!! This is 2 yrs old.
It took me 6 months to find my doubles. Both were bought at huge savings (40-75% off). remeber the fun is in the looking for your treasure.
Cheers

Butch Searcy builds a highly respected working man's or professional Hunter's rifle. Many of Africa's PH's bet thier life on his products.

The over under rifles are not as handy or as quick to reload as a side by side because the lower barrel requires more movement to clear the receiver. The prices of these things generally start at outrageous and rise rapidly from there. I am fortunate that I found the doubles heavy, clubby, and no faster in heavy chamberings than a good quality bolt gun at 1/10 the price.

Edited to add . . .
I am sure that should you have the opportunity to handle and shoot a British double, that it would become quickly apparent why the Searcy guns are less expensive. I'll never own either, but that's the opinion of someone who owns a number or doubles from various makers.

I got to handle Darrel Yowsi's .577 Westley Richards double a while back. Beautiful rifle, something I'll never own. For ####s and giggles I had to check out their website when I got home to throughly depress myself. If my memory is intact the absolute cheapest one could be ordered was over 100 grand, and it just went up from there.
I don't think I could ever be happy hunting without a bolt gun within easy reach, and it would be a cold day in hell before I'd let a tracker carry jewelry like that for me. Still, a guy can dream. My dreams require a heavy rifle for the price of a built up boltgun and scope, and someone to carry it for me until Wannabebwana asks for the "Stopper".:D

We are expecting an order of Sagittaire double rifles as well as combination guns for June/July.

We also have an order pending for a few Demas Double rifles in 470 NE, 500 NE, 450/400 and 577

we will also carry the Siace double rifles in 9.3x74R as well as 45/70 (July/August)

This Chapuis, the UGEX model (Utility Grade) goes for about $5000-5200 in the states. It is available in 9.3x74R.

I will be keeping my eye on the tradexcanada web site! What models will you be getting? Any prices set yet?

The thing about the Sagittaire Express One and Traquer One is they have aluminum receivers with a "replaceable" steel insert (wearable item??). The Double Express has a steel receiver.

Both have a funky safety that looks to be useless for a left hander like me.

They have user adjustable regulation, I don't know if it is vertical only or if there is one for horizontal as well.
