I'm thinking of getting a Trapper length '92 style rifle from puma. I prefer the shorter barrel for bush work. From reading most of the posts (yes I used the search function :D) people tend to find that the recoil of the .44 puma is pretty stout.
Would I be better off with a .357 ?
I would be using it mosly on medium size critters + black bears.
Still can't decide if the .44 or .357 is the best choice.
Looking forward to your opinions and maybe pics of your 16'' puma gun.

get the .44 rem mag I'm gonna be getting either a Puma or a Marlin in .44 most likely for my game gun even my toy as I'm told by most they are a really FUN gun to shoot and you can hand load the ammo with your actual hand. I just can't quite decide which gun I want. That and when you get your puma .44 you can tell me what its like to shoot ;)

I am a really big fan of the .357 I have 3 (Marlin, Puma and SA Timber Wolf) I have taken my share of Bambi, Yogi, Beavers etc... Some here might comment on the calibre being small for game animals but like any calibre shot placement and load are key. In a lot or all provinces 18.5in. barrell is needed for hunting to be legal. Try the .357 you wont be disapointed.

I really like my 16" 357 puma. It is quite acurate at the ranges I have shot it at.
The 92 action is reportedly stronger then the marlin. I imagine since they chambered it for the .454 casull you could load the 357 or 44 mag chamberings pretty hot without trouble.
I have read the opinion that out to 100 yards the 44 mag is better than a 30-30

44 recoil in a rifle isn't bad at all. Very good cartridge for big game far better than the 357! (30% more bullet weight at the same velocity... a substantial increase in power and flexibility).

I wouldn't hesitate to use either for deer and black bear. I would probably give a bit of an edge to the 44 on game larger than this, but I am sure that others have used the 357 here as well. My puma 92 in only seems to recoil so much on account of the steel buttplate, but it isn't unbearable by anymeans. plus you could put a recoil pad on it.

Not true, I have a Winchester 44 Mag Trapper & its 16 inch barrel is no problem for hunting in any province I have lived in (AB, SK, NS, Ont)....because it's a manually operated lever gun.

You are thinking of centrefire semi-automatic rifles in regards to 18.5 inch barrels.

Puma Trapper

I recently took delivery of a Puma trapper .44 Mag. with 16" bbl. from Doc Rowland. Quality is good, and it shoots.

Firstly, the 16" bbl. is perfectly legal in a lever gun.

For deer and bear, you need the vastly superior power of the .44 Mag. Why use a cartridge that may just wound? Especially past 50-75 yards.

Try the new Federal Fusion 240gr. load....

And for range/practice, load with .44 Special....

Held a Puma .44 Mag in carbine with a 20" barrel today light gun very maneuverable, light trigger pull, smooth crisp action then picked up a marlin........heavier trigger pull but not by much. Stiffer but still a smooth crisp action but the gun was much heavier. If you want a light weight gun to use go for a Puma Carbine. Holding that Puma decided what brand and caliber I'm getting. Gonna try and get the M92 Rifle I like the octagonal barrel but will need to hold one first to see the weight differences.

Just a bit of similar information here.

In 2006 while I lived in Cold Lake, I experimented a bit with my 44 Mag Wichester Trapper, with it's original factory rear & front sight at 100 & 200 yards.

I found with most factory 240 grain jacketed, the 5th upper notch corespponded to the 200 yard steel gong.

Using the same 5th notch and using a friends handload of 300 grain LBT style, cast, 18.5 grains AA#9, was right on for 100 yards.

I believe the third notch on the ramp, was what I used 240 grain factory copper jacketed with, for 100 yards and under.
The previously mentioned 300 grain cast, was about 2.5 inches lower on the target board at 100 yards, then the factory 240s, using the same third notch.

Exacting accuracy difficult to achieve, sometimes I had sub-inch groups of two maybe three, and the next one of two rounds, easily opened group, up to 3 inches at 100 yards.
I used good lighting conditions and freshly painted, the 10 X 10 inch gong, for good definiton against the forested background.

I'm on the fence about acquiring a .44 mag lever at the moment.

.30-30 is much more common (Walmart and CanTire) but from the research I've done it looks like once you have the brass it's much cheaper to reload .44 mag then .30-30.

Can anyone second that?

Also is .44 mag the same dimensions as a .44 spl in all aspects except for case length?

BOOOOOO.... it be nice if that can make one in 10mm

good for the glock 20 and good for hunting with fun lever action gun too

btw the glocks for sale are awesome for $599. are the mags 15-17 rds that are pinned to 10 rds??
