Do used hunting rifles hold their value or are most of the used rifles for sale on the EE just over priced? It seems to me that as soon as something has been used you can't expect to get the same and sometimes more then what it was worth when new. I have yet to see what I would be considered a good deal on the EE. I've purchased 2 used rifles recently for what I would consider fair prices and they were both from other sites.

Maybe I'm just cheap.

Don't forget that the price shown is the owner's idea of the gun's value. Some people have a warped idea of the value of their equipment.

I once knew a lovely-but-short-on-common-sense woman who thought her AMC Eagle with 100, 000 miles + was worth $5000. She wasn't very impressed when I told her the only way she would get that much for the car was if she was included in the deal.

Any set price is just an invitation to offer. If I see something I want I offer what the item is worth, to me. I've paid premiums for some things I can't live without and walked away from sales that were too expensive. Having said that I do not like those who will low ball everything out there! There is a price where both parties can benefit!

Guys price their rifles usually to cover most of the cost of the new toy they have their eye on.....

Yes, most of the used rifles are overpriced. Unless it says FIRM, try a reasonable offer. All that can happen is a pm that says NO THANKS.

Yes sometimes they are, but what I've seen in gunshops and there price of used guns, and no dicker price on them. I think if your buying a used gun you are just as lucky to find one on this site and no GST or PST ( where it applies).
You get to handle the rifle in a gunstore, which helps sometimes, but I've had good luck on this board so far! If you find you need it you buy it ! :D

Some of the older stuff can demand a premium as the newer replacement models can be sh*t sometimes. I sometimes think of a well cared for rifle as a makeshift savings account as the depreciation is not much usually. Also I think most of the EE ads are open to offers, I know mine are.

A lot of people visit the EE. I suspect it has become a major marketplace. A piece will sell for what someone thinks it is worth. You will notice that there are items sold literally within minutes. Other pieces get BTT'd repeatedly. This should tell the seller something. No harm in making an offer. If it is a reasonable one, it might be accepted.

tiriaq -I think you hit it on the nail- head ! I'v sold in minutes, on some items!
Hay wait a minute! maybe I'm selling to low?? but I like a quick sell.

I tend to buy nearly new rifles from a small group on here. I know they take care of their rifles, can adjust a trigger, bed a rifle etc. To me if a rifle is in excellent shape, the new price is $800 plus tax, the used one is in near perfect shape with rings and bases maybe $650-700 depending how bad I WANT IT.

Most of the good deals are gone within 30 minutes. The left-overs are stuff nobody wants or the price is too high. After 3 or 4 BTT's, drop the price or remove the ad.

I've gotten awesome deals and likewise sold some for good deals, you just need to be quick on the trigger and not ask silly questions and roll with the punches. You want truly inflated prices, go to a gun show.

I find alot of the guns over priced for a used rifle, especially when you can get a brand new one for cheaper some of the times:) FOR EXAMPLE: If you're going to sell a Stevens to me used it better be cheap concidering I can walk down to WSS and buy a brand new one for $325 including tax.
I did sell a gently used (not common) rifle once just below new cost, not to be greedy but I didn't want to sell it and the guy really wanted it.

This is far and above the best place to find used guns. I can find whatever I want and ofer whatever price I think is fair. Although I would like to find more T/C Encore pro hunters:)

stuff sells here quickly if it is properly priced. Because of this forum, a couple of American forum and Ebay, I have completely stopped going to Gunshows.

The only dealers I buy from are on the internet, and most of them are sponsors here.

I've purchased a few guns on the EE for prices that were likely a little high, but I really wanted them, so the deals were satisfactory to me. As a seller, I usually price with a little room to move, but always have a bottom line in mind. I try not to put myself in a "gotta have the cash ASAP" situation, and if the top offer doesn't meet my bottom line, back in the box she goes.

That reminds me of a guy in Britt Ontario that has an AMC EAGLE with about 15 others he keeps on his property for spare parts :)

I find it also helps to go used gun sites like Epp's to find out what the retailers are selling their used guns for. Often, the base prices are similar except that the retailers charge PST/GST on top.

I disagree, I have made a bunch of great deals on this sites EE. I find the gun market a little soft meaning it is hard to get anywhere near your money out of a gun on here. I believe it is a result of the low prices on new value guns such as the Remington SPS. It is hard to sell the used Remington BDL or CDL for $600 after paying $900 for it new. The value minded buyers that are attracted to used guns are often more interested in the SPS new for $500. Six years ago, you would have got the $600.

I just sold a BLR package for well less than half of what it cost new and the gun was in a desirable caliber, in great shape. I was amazed I got so little for it.

In my estimation it is a buyers market.:)

I agree with what you're saying but I find a lot of sellers are trying to get back their original purchase prices or very close to it, that's what frustrates me. I guess I just have to wade through all the overpriced stuff to find the deals.

It should be a buyers market with a availability of inexpensive guns some guys just don't realize that I guess.
