I really want a rifle with open sights and a quality "old world" walnut and blued look to it. I will be picking 30-06 and have about $800 to spend on one brand new, which both of these rifles fall into. I have no experience with either rifle and wanna know the main differences between them both. Is there a better rifle out of the two?? If you had to pick one for the next 50 years, what one would it be?? Is there any other rifle in this price range im overlooking?? Thanks

I would go for the CZ as it is a CRF action. The CZ would probably give you a better resale value too.

I'd say go to Trade Ex and get one of Their Husqvarna 1600 models in 30-06. You'll not match them for the fit, finish, feel, and quality unless you spend well over $1000,and even then You'd have trouble getting a better Rifle!

What is a CRF action?? Bare with me, I dont have much experience outside of 12g shotguns and .22lr. Really, a Husqvarna 1600 would potentially outgun the CZ and the Remington??

Cz 550

Has anyone ever heard or can confirm the reasoning of going with 30-06 over .308 in a CZ 550 action. I guess the 550 action is a long action and is better suited to the 30-06 over the .308. While the .308 is a shorter cartridge, it is made to work in a 550 action. Does this make any sence or is it just mumbo jumbo??

Check out a HVA,then you'll see what I mean. But beware they are very, very addictive. I've seen the light, and I'm currently replacing what I own with Husqvarnas. Now to just find a full stock one.....................

I'm not sure if they've made it up here yet, but I'd look at one of the new production Winchester Model 70's before you purchase, if you can find one.

UUuumm.....yeah........voi. Good thing I didn't have any food or drink in my mouth when I clicked on your 2 'helpful' links..........:p:D

savage-man, that is another good suggestion, if you intend to go with new production rifles. Might be awhile till we get the new M70s up here though. A clean used one would be a great option as well.

The CZ hands down, especially for the "old world" aspect: European Walnut, classic Mauser 98 action, controlled round feed, and they come from the old world :).

Another very good CRF (controlled round feed) mauser action is the new M70 Winchesters which should be available about now.

As far as 3006 vs 308, well they are both good cartridges. The 308 fits in a slightly lighter shorter action and ballistically it is almost as good as a 3006 - although Bambi or Teddy would not know the difference.

I prefer the 3006 others the 308 I view it as kind of a Ford vs Chevy thing in that they are both very good with minor differences it really comes down to personal preference. For me, for the extra 1/2" or whatever of bolt slide and the extra oz or so I'f rather have the better ballistics of the 3006.

I own a couple of CZ's, but for those of us that carry our rifles in the mountains Remington is a good way to go. My father's 30-06 is 9.5lbs scoped.

You might consider a used Remington if you hunt the steep stuff.

Controlled round feed is over-rated in an off the shelf rifle.

What about a Husqvarna 1600 in 30-06?? These things can be had for like $500 for a nice one, will they be compareable to a 700 BDL or a 550 Lux?? I know they dont have adj triggers, but they seem to have evreything else im looking for. Is it smart to save $300-$400 and buy a HVA and be done with it? I havnt seen too many reviews or opinions on the 1600 so im kinda in the dark.

Cz or more exactly BRNO is the way to go. Even a BRNO 602 in .308 or a BRNO 21H (if you want light) is better then a Remington without a lot of work / mods. The CZ / BRNO will work .... forever..... they are rugged and built to last with steel and wood with a time proven design. Nothing wrong with Rem - they are just built to different standards.

The 21H was a lightweight mountain rifle before anyone decided to call rifles that. If you want one lightweght rifle - a 21H in 8x57 will do it all (best if you relaod tho).

If you want a 30-06 - go to tradex and buy a BRNO ZG47 for $700-800 in 30-06 and never look back. Easy scope mounting, accurate, durable and you dont need to baby it. Best thing is that a ZG47 will always be desirable for resale.

The HVA - same thing -- just a little more difficult re scope mounting - but if you get one with the scope correctly mounted with a very good bore, you will be very satisfied.
