I was shooting last night and as usual i was loading 10 rounds into my mags and start shooting...some guy comes over from the other side of the range and asks me how many rounds I am putting into my mags...I said 10 and then he goes on telling me that you can only load 5 rounds into your mag and the only time you are legally allowed to have 10 rounds is in a competition, i just complied with him so I could continue shooting and it isnt that much of a pain to load every 5 rounds...the guy told me that he has mags that can hold 17 rounds but he is only allowed to load 5 rounds, this is what made me question him the most because i know for a fact you can't have a mag that holds more than 10 rounds...is what he is saying true?!

thanks:)

If I'm not mistaken, if he's a police officer, he can use full capacity mags with his issued firearm.

Check the rules for your range.

I'm no lawyer/expert but it sounds to me totally uniformed.

I believe his 17 round mag, unless pinned, is illegal no matter how many rounds he loads into it.

You're 10 round mag is totally legal loaded to the top.

Next time he questions how many rounds you are putting in your mags, ask to see a badge. When he can't produce one, get the range officer and tell him you are being harassed.

No, you cannot have any mags that hold more than 10 rounds, unless its a rimfire rifle, than you can have as many rounds as you want.

Pistols - 10 is the max, 17 is a court appearance.

Your rent-a-cop friend is a dumbass. Tell him to learn the rules as opposed to enforcing one's that don't exist.

Sounds like this guy doesn't know what he's talking about, and I doubt he's an LEO... sounds like he's justifying to himself having those illegal mags.

There MIGHT??????? be some club rule that requires 5 in a mag and you missed it. BUT admiting that the guy that approached you has mags that hold 17rounds, shows that this individual doesn't have his 5h1tt togather.

You find people like that every now and again.

Unpinned magazine = prohibited device.
Well, not exackly. Unpinned pistol mag or centerfire rifle mag for Semi automatic = prohibited device. "They" make up enought stupid rules, lets not help them by making up more of our own!

+1 this is a possibilty, some clubs haven't changed their rules since the days of single action hammer spurs, and only allow the loading of 5 rounds. I've heard of this at some clubs, thankfully never experienced it. Sure would make a day of practicing double taps quite tedious.

Here we go yet again with typical CGN speculation without facts.

Has anyone ever been to a club that only allows 5 rounds / mag? Or better yet, has anyone ever been to a club that only allows 1 round per mag?

Some of you keep trying to 1up others with these ridiculous, BS scenarios that you don't know for sure if they even exist or not.

"Oh ya, well I heard from a guy on a sidewalk outside a 7-11 that some clubs don't allow ammunition AT ALL".

Sheeple. There....now I have 1up on everybody.

If you've never seen it in real life, what makes it so noteworthy that you fell you have to bring it up here? This is how all of these BS rumors start.

You=legal
Him=dumb,illegal,uninformed(maybe cop)
I hope he isn't a cop, as I hate it when cops who carry guns for their job, dont take the time to learn the rules from the CFC. If he isn't a cop, then he should be reported to them. Prohibited mags , no matter how many you load into them, are ILLEGAL. Its not that you only load 10, its that you COULD load 17 as you pull up to your favorite bank.
I would keep an eye out for this dude in the future, as he needs either a re-educating, or to be reported.

Several clubs I've been to including shooters choice in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario have a rule where you're only allowed to have five rounds in the magazine unless you're at a competition shoot. You should know the rules of the range before you shoot there.

There, now I have one upped you.

p.s. is this really a big issue? If you don't like the club, don't shoot there.

I use to belong to PSA up in North Vancouver BC and they had a 5 round rule in effect at the range.

So it is not a myth that there are ranges that only allow you to load 5 rounds in a mag at a time.

Like some of the CGNer's have already posted. To own an unpinned mag that is capable of holding more than 10 rounds is a prohibited device.

Yup, the club I go to has the 5 rounds in the mag "rule". If you're there by yourself, or one or two guys, who cares. But, when you have 10 guys all blasting away, it's nice to have a stopage after 2 strings to change targets or to go down range and take a look or whatever. It's also for safety when there's new shooters on the line, far easier for the range officer to keep track of things.

10 round mags are legal. If he uses unpinned mags, even if he is an off duty cop he is breaking the law.
Loading 5 is a rule at some clubs. Most though dont care.
Next time he approaches you, tell him to take a long hike.
