I know it is going to sound funny, but do you guys now about any inexpensive(surplus) rifle chambered in 500NE 3" cartridge? I've just accidentally stumbled into pile of cheap ammo. Rifle chambered in 500NE can make a very nice "squirrel" gun. :)

"Hello? Yes, I'm wondering if you carry anything cheap, chambered in 500NE?

yes.

Uh huh.

Ok.

Can you at least wait until I hang up to laugh?!"

the 500 NE is basically the same as the 50-140. 'Cheap' in this context would be <$100,000. A Ruger #1 would be your most likely candidate for conversion

DARN IT! If I had only known, I would not have passed on that cheap Purdey double in .500NE!

buy the ammo cheap, sell it at market value, use the cash to buy something else?

Than is what I probably going to do. It is old very old ammo (+20years) by Kynoch and can only be used for components. Will see if I can pull bullets out without damaging them and just sell brass and bullets separately.

Its ok, you can find another one. They are not so difficult to come by. ;)

20 years is practically new for ammo. Some milsurp is older than my parents, and I have a child.

Yes, it would be considered OK for 7.62x39 milsurp. But 500NE is considered to be old when it is older than 10 years. Hang-fire can be deadly on such big calibers.

Do some research. You probably be surprised at how much that ammo is worth AS IS.

I wouldn't pull them.

.

A custom Ruger #1 is certainly the most cost effective way of getting a .500 NE. I was offered the rifle I hunted with, a John Wilkes .500 NE double for a cool $40K, but given that I thought it was a club which forever turned me off doubles, I passed. Have you checked out the price of brass and ammo? It could be as much as $200 for 5 rounds.

I've seen guys stock up on .223 ammo but holy s**t! Thats a lot of .500 NE!Try one of them African Hunting forums and sell the stuff as is and let whoever buys it play with taking it apart or shooting it up for practice ammo. If you want to sell a 5 pack, send me a pm :)

Yikes! If I was an elephant or cape buffalo, that photo would cause me a LOT of grief.
Tell me that photo is Photoshopped.

Buddy, that photo represent only about one third of the actual pile. My camera doesn't have wide enough lens to show you all of it at ones!
