Well I spent the day at the range today w/ a friend trying out my new Thompson Centre Omega Z5 and was very pleased w/ this rifle.
I was shooting 2 Triple 7 pellets followed by a 250 gr. Hornady SST 45 cal bullet/sabot and easily got 1" groups @ 100 yards. The rifle is easily capable of a 200 yards shot as I was hitting a metal plate when raising my elevation 6 inches from the 100 yards zero.
I spoke with another fellow I met on the range who did a bunch of testing for T/C w/ Ian McMurchy and he said that the Encore and Omega's can obtain 3" groups at 300 yards :shock: . Im not that good but at least I know the muzzleloader has some great potential.
My other buddy just bought a traditions Pursuit LT and his expeirence was not as good as mine, things broke and tempers flared :lol:
Anyone looking for an accurate simple smoke pole the Omega really fits the bill.

Im going to start developping a new load next week for my Omega.

Nosler makes some .45 cal 300gr. Partitons. They are $60 a box, but I would think they would be devastating. When you think about it, most premium ML bullets are around or over a buck each so it aint that bad. In addition, I could use the same bullets when I get my .45-70 (they were designed for this cartirdge I think).

I was using Powerbelts last year but want to try something new this year.

Mine shoots Hornady 44cal 300 grain XTP's(saboted)and two 777 pellets very well.It may shoot other bullets better, but believe it or not I have never tried anything else.No need to.I have killed 5 deer with this combo. I have never recovered a bullet,even on a buck I shot at 140 yards last year.

Steyr,are the Nosler's the "Jim Shockey" ones :?: I guess they're new on the market? He (Jim) also advertises a powder called "Jim Shockey's Gold FYI?
How did you find the Powerbelts performance.

Huntsman, no I dont think these are endorsed by Shockey. These are you run of the mill reloading component partitions.

I think Nosler packages some .44 cal partitions with sabots for ML'ers, however, if you buy the "muzzleloading" versions in the package of 10 with sabots, they are much more expensive.

As for the Powerbelts, they did the job perfectly. But i've read quite a few mixed reviews so I wanted to try and work up another load with a proven bullet, that I have used before. Grouping were not bad with the PB's either, behind 2 50gr 777 pellets I had groups in the 1.5'' range at 100 yards. Could probably tighten them up a bit with carefully measured loose powder, but I didn't have time. I forget what grain of bullet I was using, i'll have to check. I think it was the 295 Aero Tip.
 
I spent the morning at the range, and spent a little time with the Omega.

I found quite a good load... and it's fairly simple.

Two 50gr. 777 pellets, behind a Hornady .45 300 grain XTP in a PR sabot.

All told, the groups were 1 ragged hole at 100 yards, and it was somewhat windy this morning.

This beats the hell out of my powerbelts. I think the difference is that the PB bullets are loose in barrel, there is not much resistance even after a couple of shots. The PR sabots however, are a VERY tight fit.

I bought some of the .45 300 grain Nosler Partitions I was talking about, I will try them out this weekend.
 
My gun was shooting great then accuracy went to hell :? I tried loose powder in different weights, different bullets but kept getting groups all over the place.
I later found that the dials which adjust windage and elevation loosen up and were moving after every shot. I was very frustreated but at least I found the problem before season opener.

They are sabots made by Precision Rifle... the same guys that make the dead center bullets.

Im not all that sure that different sabots would make much difference in accuracy.. but im sure not all sabots are created equal.

So far I can say I really like the rifle :D I wasn't happy with my scope loosening up but with that problem fixed Im sure I'll be able to take a deer w/ it on the opener.
I think Im going to punt it for an Encore after this season as the Encore fit and felt alot better. I also like the idea of being able to switch the barrels from a muzzleloader to centerfire.

Is anyone having accuracy problems w/their omega? I bought one in stainless synthetic when they first came out and havn't shot a respectable group yet. To put it bluntly this thing is a piece of S*&T !!!!!! Before you judge me on what I have done I will tell you, I have tried all sorts of bullets from Hornady 250 xtp to 3 types and weights of the greatly approved dead centers to speer jacketed 200 round nose. I have tried powders from 777 loose ffg and fffg to pellets 100gr and 150gr. pyrodex pellets 100gr I have tried the 209 primers and even bought one of the breech plug change ups to 22 hornet from precision rifle. I had a leupold 3x9-40 vari x II on it and changed to a burris fullfield 2 ballistic plex. I have about given up. I just put the burris on today and went to the range and shot. The load was 2 777pellets and 45cal-250gr hp/xtp and the 209 primer. at 100 yards the first shot was 4 inches right, second shot 14 right 10 high??? third shot missed the 4x4 plywood :( I have about had it. the real piss off is that I sold my old inline black-knight that shot easy 3 inch groups for this crap!!

It seems that after the first shot I can't push the saboted bullet as far down . I can if I run a patch w/some water on it but what good is that in the field? If anyone has any Ideas I would appreciate it. :roll:
 
saskhunter, thats quite odd... I have never heard of an Omega that had that kind of poor accuarcy.

Are you sure everything is in order? All screwes tightened, sights tightened? Maybe there is something major there that you don't know about?
 
Thanks for the reply guys, the only thing I haven't done is take the rings off and check the base? I guess i will do that next. I plan on taking it to a gun smith today. I am going to start a new thread to see if anyone else has seating problems I think this is the main problem.
 
I just put a down payment on a Thompson Omega .50 To tell you the truth I am new to black powder and any hunting rifle really as I have never owned any (just got my first .22 today thanks hicaliber!) only shot AR's, machine guns and rocket launchers for the last 8 yrs. What are the best round? Powder? Primers?
