your rifles for different game - what do you use?

My next moose/bear/caribou could go down to anything from an SKS to a .58 cal muzzle loader. The freezer seems to get filled no matter what, so the choice of firearms is just for s**ts and giggles, really.:dancingbanana:

wow, a lot of variation. it's interesting how some have a 'does it all' caliber they like to use whereas everyone else uses some pretty hefty firepower. :D

I've got plenty of guns, but I figured out long ago that you an only have one in your hands at a time. Therefore, picking a rifle that offers some versatility in different applications- Be it versatility of cartridge, or versatility of how th erifle is applied- makes good sense, especially if you are hunting off the beaten track, away from your house and/or vehicle.

6 gun battery
22lr
223
257 roberts
30/06
375 H&H
and last 12 ga shotgun

Does everything on the planet, however i've also 303, 6.5swede, 45acp, and a bunch o other stuff

I have several big game rifles in chambered for several different cartridges. I do this as I enjoy collecting rifles not because I need them to hunt.

If however I was going sell off all the redundant rifles and keep only one for hunting it would be my 338-06 which is in my opinion the most versatile cartridge available for hunting big game in Canada.

it various, but ideally:

brno ZKW465/22 k-hornet for gophers and coyotes.
ithaca 37/12 guage for black birds, skunks, and turkeys.
brno 21H/8x57 for all-around use, deer and elk (and a sheep if i can ever find a legal ram during the season).
mannlicher-schoenauer M1908/8x56 for general use where ranges aren't too far.
husqvarna 9.3x57 for when and if i ever get a Region 4 grizzly or moose draw.

i am working on getting a brno combo gun/22 savage over 12 guage tuned in as a turkey, coyote, and spring bear gun.

usually what happens though is i take some milsurp rifle out like on my one and only moose hunt, or for goat, or the majority of the time that i am pursueing deer and elk.

Collecting new guns of course is fun,but if i had to I could get by quite nicely with just my original 30-06 pump for moose, deer and bear and 12ga pump for everything else that walks, runs, swims or flies in NB.Hell,I could get by with just the 12ga actually?

That said though,I have/had several shotguns for waterfowl and upland,a .22lr for plinking white rabbits on brown ground in December,.223 for yote calling,30-06,.303,30-30,.50 cal ML, and compound bow for big stuff....and will likely acquire more?

During BC's general fall open seasons and the large variety of game available, you'll likely find me with a .270WSM or .338WM in the scabbard with a .22RF tucked away somewhere for "chickens". If the weather is nasty, I might head into the wet timber after moose & elk with an open sighted model 94 .30-30. Come winter it's predator time and I'm packing the 9422Mag for lynx and the M700 .223 for coyotes. If the targeted calling area has a good wolf population, the wife's little Model Seven .243 steps into lead batting position :D

Hmmmm...I own .17, .204, .223, 243, 257, 25/06, 270, 7/08, 7 mag, 308, 300 win, 300 ultra, 325 WSM, 338, 350, 416, 45/70, 450 and a .44 mag.

My guns this year?

Deer/B. bear bush gun: Deerfield in .44 mag, wearing a Prismatic 1X, throwing 240 gr. JSP's

Moose, yotes, hogs,longer range deer/bear: 700 mountain LSS in 7/08, Leupold 2.5-8X36 VXIII, 140 gr. TSX's

Springfield M6 or a few CCI .44 shotshells for the ditch chickens :)

Alright here goes:
Small game/ Marlin 80 .22lr
Predators/ Husqvarna 6.5x55
large game in open field terrain/ Lee Enfield .303 or Browning 30-06, depending on my mood.
Large game in bush terrain/ Marlin 336 30-30
Turkey and any large game below the Hwy 401 that is shotgun hunting only in those Wildlife Management Units/ Steoger P350 12Ga (A lot of people don't like it, but its' been nothing but good to me!)

That's my lineup as it stand so far, but I may be looking to add a 10Ga semi to it soon, if I can get the right price.

Right now and I don't expect this to change this year:D

My main gun for hunting is a Husqvarna Model 4100 Lightweight in 7x57...

That being said I have a very nice Remington Model 700 Stainless 300 Ultra Mag that is crying to go hunting this year as well...

Either way I have my needs all covered from deer, elk,to bear...

some people use .223 or 22-250 on big game? is that even legal?

yep, in BC the only species with a restriction is bison. although the messed up thing is shotguns are not allowed for all species, so the 17 remington or 22 hornet is legal for grizzly, but shotguns with slugs are not.

Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 30-06.

150gr Game Kings for deer and smaller, 180gr Game Kings or Partitions for larger.

Having at one time owned 6 or 7 hunting rifles, I've come to realize that I have more fun shooting range guns (target rifles, AR15, pistols) so that's where I'm spending my money.

Everything from groundhawgs up to and including moose - Sako Finnlight .308
Everything from moose down to and including groundhawgs - Rem 700 .338WM

Sometimes .50 ML for ####s and giggles.:)

For deer in rifle country I use Remington 760 in 270, and a Mossberg 500 in the heavy stuff. Down South I use .50 CVA for the deer muzzle loader season. I also have a nice Enfield Sporter MkIII that I use if I'm expecting long shots in the open. All of my other guns are for shooting holes in paper and the occasional extermination of "invasive species".

how is the .223 being allowed to shoot deer a good thing Gatehouse? from all the discussions the general consensus tends to be that it's not humane due to the high risk of not killing but rather wounding the animal.
