Every five minutes there seems to be another thread about why ammo brand x is not for sale in Canada. Here is the list of approved ammo:

UPDATED LINK 2011-11-10: http://www2.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/mms/lae-lea/index.cfm?lang=eng

If it is on this list it can be imported. If it is not on this list it would need to be approved. Approval take at least a year if the ammo is deemed exceptable.

thx for the list, but i've bought/seen ammo for sale that's not on the list?

like PMC 9mm cartridges or Samson .50AE, how do they get it in (or am i not reading the doc properly)???

thx CanAm, i did see the Mfg on the list, but the specific calibre wasn't listed....

sooo.. as long as the mfg is listed, any of their calibre is okay?

ie. Samson .50AE does not need to be listed specifically if the Samson brand is on it? same goes for the PMC 9mm specifically???

oh and thanks for the list again....

Basically, yes. If you send an email to NRCAN they can provide the complete list per manufacturer. But most have their complete line approved.

Approved Ammunition for Canada

Hello CANAM, I'm sure you already know, but many of your readers may not , but there's two lists, one of approved ammunition and explosives for small arms that is for import, and the other list which we are on. It's what's made here in Canada, and not imported, already approved for consumers by Nrcan. It's domestic list of approved manufactures and products.

One reader wrote in about casings, no, they are not on this list, they are governed by Department of External Affairs and International Trade, and import permits are required, but they are not munitions, so they are not on Nrcan's list.

pistol ammunition, fully automated machines, quality components, FYI.

lake city is on the list for 30.06. does that mean that the 5.56 and 7.62 is good to go?

The .30-06 is listed separately because there is a general provision for NATO spec ammo, look under NATO. .30-06 is not a NATO calibre.

DON'T FORGET that even if ammo is on the internet list be certain to confirm it with NRC, they will check the "official list" for you.

An excellent example is the 7.62x54R , on the list on their site it clearly states that center fire rifle ammunition is OK....
However on their internal, caliber sp[ecific list, it is not authorized....
You can firgure that one out

Might have something to do with all the 7.62x54R AP/Incendiary that came into the country back in the late 70's early 80's
